It’s not just replacing jobs and that’s it. Robots will replace jobs for a reason…they’ll be faster, better, and SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper. All this means is that goods and services will cost MUCH MUCH less to actually make, and provide to the public. MUCH LESS! So much less, that humans will not need to make NEARLY as much money in order to live and buy things because of how cheap everything is. That’s it: Things cost much less because robots make them. People work less because they don’t need as much money. People can afford way more than they used to be able to afford…even though they’re working a small fraction of the amount of time.

Everyone says “AI will take all the jobs.” If that happens… how does this future actually work? No jobs → no income → no spending. So who buys things? Who pays rent? Who keeps the economy moving? What am I missing here?

If the Iran war isn't NATO's war and Europeans don't want to get involved, despite the need to open the Strait of Hormuz, then Ukraine isn't America's war. Europeans will regret this.

@joshrogin Now Europe have to face Putin on its doorstep largely on its own. Alienating a key ally while allowing the regime to control the Strait of Hormuz is a strategic mistake and it has only emboldened them to use it as political leverage.NATO now has to deal with shit! Their choice

“I don’t think the European countries are going to come and bail out of this mess. You have to think about the context here. Trump just spent a year hurting their economies on purpose, threatening to attack NATO, threatening to pull out of NATO. And then the Trump administration started this war without even bothering to consult them, didn’t take their interests into account until he needed them. And their populations are at historic levels of anti-Americanism because of how we’ve treated them over the last year.” “And they are democracies, so I don’t think their leaders are going to be able to overcome that. And why would they? It’s much easier, and you’ll see a bunch of countries doing this, to negotiate with the Iranians. The Iranians are setting up a system whereby they let the ships pass that they want to let pass. Just in the last 24 hours, they let several ships pass for countries that they’re not at war with. So if you were any country in the world, depending on this Strait, it’s much easier to make a deal with the Iranians than to send your ships down the Strait, to make them sitting ducks for Iranian drones and missiles, which seems crazy reckless.”

The appalling Iranian regime is a permanent threat to British citizens & interests. After a decade of failed negotiations, the West was left with no viable option but to act to degrade its military capabilities. By refusing to support the US and Israel, Starmer has left the UK looking weak & humiliated on the world stage. I commend our allies for their decisive and courageous action

I supported the Venezuela operation and I’m on board with acquiring Greenland because they both pass the only litmus test I care about: Will it be a net benefit to the United States? Venezuela and Greenland are low risk, high reward. Big wins for our people. We gain much and lose little or nothing. Easy call, as far as I’m concerned. I’m not actually an isolationist. I’m just an America First conservative in the strictest sense of the term. Does the benefit for America outweigh the cost? It must, or it’s a bad policy. This is one of my absolute core political principles, and always has been. With this Iran thing, I don’t see how the math works in our favor. Or at least it seems highly unlikely that it will work in our favor. And so I’m against it. If that puts me at odds with the administration, and with much of the conservative commentariat, so be it. I have to stick to what I believe. People who have followed my work for a long time are not remotely surprised by my stance on this.

The US American right wing is now blaming Europe for not helping them attack Iran. To be honest, Europe does not yet have very clear opinions about this. The USA launched a war without warning, without a public debate, and without consulting Europe, so we are only now starting to form opinions about it. Right now, I think most people feel like this: NATO is a defensive alliance. We have no obligation to join U.S. attacks on other countries. We would only do so if they involved us and presented compelling reasons, clear objectives, and a solid plan. And all of that is missing. There is no question that the Iranian regime is evil and deserves to be overthrown after it killed 30,000 demonstrators. But the goal does not seem to be regime change, and the threat of nuclear weapons is not convincing. We all remember the USA lying about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and cannot be expected to trust a similar claim at face value again. We need better reasons and stronger evidence before entering a war without a plan that is likely to result in chaos. I am open to arguments, but I think this is how most Europeans feel right now.

@AnonAtLaw @RasmusJarlov Got the last line right. You've made your bed by your 'supreme leader' belittling and threatening historical allies. His comments on UK forces who fought & died for the US was an outrage and rightly the majority of US service men were equally disgusted. Enough is enough.

@RasmusJarlov European countries can choose to be the ally of the most powerful nation, or not. The idea that the US shold agree to sacrifice lives and treasure for countries who don’t show themselves to be its friends in normal times is a strange one. Beds are made, then they are lied in.

@chriswithans I used to wonder if the medal count should reflect the number of players in each sport. Not the bench, but on the court players, so hockey would be six, relay teams four, etc.

This is of course insane because the U.S. will have won gold in the most prestigious event, women's figure skating, and gold in the team skating event; plus gold in women's hockey and either silver or gold in men's hockey. But Norway wins 25-odd medals in Long Walks with Skis and they get the top spot. Like hey, I won the Secretary-Treasurer position for all the clubs I created in high school. I am therefore a better politician than Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Trump combined!
Political Election Projections@tencor_7144

Today's Winter Olympics saw Norway beat their best-ever performance at a games, while the United States seemed to have secured 2nd over Italy. The Netherlands secured 2 golds today to be within 1 gold of overtaking Italy, but they lack medal favorites in the remaining contests.

Again, this is the second most prestigious medal at the winter Olympics behind the men's hockey medal. And yet it counts exactly the same (1 Gold) in the medal standings as the Men's Sprint Classic Cross-Country skiing gold medal, which is one of 6 golds Norway has won in that one sport. There are just two hockey golds awarded despite it being the biggest winter sport in the world. This is a great injustice.

@PeterMcCormack Trying to avoid sounding like Monty Python, but at 14, I used to walk 2 miles into town alone on a Sat morning then worked 5am to 5pm on the market selling fruit. I used to get £5 cash, run to the store and buy 2 vinyl albums. Did this until 16 then started FT work.

Minimum wage people… First job was a milk round, £12.50 for a whole morning starting at 5am. Second job paper round, £10. Third job in a factory putting inserts in magazines - £2.30 an hour. Fourth job in a factory putting handles on umbrellas - £2.80 an hour. No holiday pay, no guaranteed hours, no pension contributions, no paternity, no HR bollocks. Work hard or fuck off. We’ve bred young people to feel like job is deserved, endless benefits, endless ways to use HR if you are shit at your job. Finding good young people is very hard, some exist, so many are lazy, lack ambitious and whiny. Incentives matter.

The Olympic committee, NBC, and even the NHL need to find a way to change the start time of the gold medal game. To potentially have USA and Canada playing in the potentially the biggest game ever and you’re going to start it when most of North America is asleep??
