Muy triste todo lo que pasó en el Mises Institute. En verdad que es de agradecer a Hoppe, a Kinsella, a Guido Hülsmann, a Dilorenzo y a todos los libertarios que no se han doblegado y que luchan con principios contra lo que está pasando. Muy muy triste lo del Mises Institute.

내가 공개적으로 이 사안에 대해 언급하는 것이 적절할지 모르겠다. 그러나 자유를 사랑하고 오경이 세상을 바라보는 아주 올바른 렌즈라고 믿는 사람으로서 자유의 등대라고 할 수 있는 미제스 연구소가 흔들리는 상황이 우려스럽다. 특히나 석연치 않은 이유로 대표가 둘이나 물러나는 상황은 더더욱 그렇다. 9년전 뉴욕에서 만나뵈었던 제프 다이스트씨는 내가 만나본 사람중 가장 신사적인 사람이었고 한국에 미제스 연구소를 설립하고 싶단 이야기와 계획서를 건네자 그는 소프트한 버전이 아닌 하드코어한 버전으로ㅡ이른바 자유의 원칙을 지키면서 운영하라며 아낌없는 격려와 조언해주었다. 그랬던 그가 석연치 않은 이유로 물러났다. 나는 그의 사임이 납득이 가지 않았기 때문에 여러경로로 그 내막을 확인해보기 시작했다. 그러나 아무것도 알아낼수 없었다. 그가 마지막으로 출연했던 휴먼액션 팟캐스트에서 현안에 대해서만 이야기했을뿐 고별인사조차 없었다. 보통 사임이라면 특히 본인의 의지에 의해 물러난 것이라면, 후임 대표를 인선하고 고별인사하는 것이 마땅한 절차일것이다. 그러나 그런 것은 없었다. 미제스 연구소 이사회 멤버 중 가깝게 지내는 분에게 이 문제에 대해 여쭤보았으나 본인도 이 소식에 대해 모르고 있으셨고 대체 무슨일이 일어나고 있는지 모르셨다. 이후 반년 넘도록 대표직은 공석이었고 류 락웰 회장님은 후임을 물색중이란 발표를 하셨다. 그리고 얼마 뒤 디로렌조 교수님이 대표가 되셨다는 발표가 나왔다. 그 즉시 나는 그에게 축하 메세지를 보냈고 디로렌조 대표님에게 빠른 답장을 받을 수 있었다. 감사를 표하며 도움이 필요하다면 언제든 연락을 하라는 것이었다. 그리고 작년 말부터 미제스 연구소 홈페이지에 대표직이 사라져있었다. 대표로 선임된지 1년이 조금 지났는데 설마 대표가 아니겠어 생각했고 시스템 문제로 치부하고 말았다. 올해 오스트리언 매거진 인터뷰 대상자로 디로렌조 대표님을 선정했고 그를 위한 인터뷰지를 준비하며 다시 연락해보았지만 그 어떤 답장도 받지 못했다. 석연치 않아 다른 직원분에게 문의를 해보았고 그 역시 사임했다는 소식을 듣게 되었다. 그 이유를 묻고 싶었지만 내부 공기가 매우 무거움을 느꼈고 화제를 돌려 락웰 회장님의 근황에 대해 이야기를 해보았다. 건강이 아주 좋으시다는 이야기를 들었고 (내가 알고 있는 정보와는 달리) 그렇다면 그를 인터뷰하겠다고 했다. 혹시 모를 그의 건강상태를 고려해서 서면인터뷰를 진행했는데 이상할 정도로 너무 늦게 답신이 왔고 몇몇 사안에 대해서는 류 답지 않은 너무나도 짧은 답변을 해왔다. 보완을 위해 추가로 사안에 대해 여쭤보기엔 시간이 없었고 답을 얻으려면 많은 시간이 필요할 것 같아 포기했다. 나는 회장님이 진심으로 건강히 계시길 바랄뿐이다. 지금도 대표직은 공석이다. 이런식으로 누군가의 입김에 의해 혹은 정치적인 목적 때문에 원칙에 기반해서 운영하는 사람을 흔들어놓는다면 그 연구소의 목적은 사라지게 되고 미래는 없게 된다. 부디 연구소의 미래를 위해서라도 미제스 교수님의 아내이신 마르키트 여사님을 비롯해 버튼 블루머트, 머레이 라스바드 등 이분들의 헌신을 생각했으면 한다.
