Good morning, in Lithuania, it's the Day of the Book Smugglers, commemorating the birthday of Jurgis Bielinis, a newspaperman who created a secret distribution network in the late 19th century to smuggle banned Lithuanian books back into the country. mentalfloss.com/article/62554/…

@utterflea Many thanks Manjula. I really enjoyed our conversation, and your questions. Your enthusiasm is lovely, and it was fun to speak about the challenges of writing the book as well.

The River Hull as it heads towards the Humber, an old barge in the low tide mud. In Philip Larkin's poem 'Here', his hymn of love to his adopted town, he wrote of 'barge-crowded water' both in the docks and here on the River Hull. The barges were used to transfer goods from ships. No longer. Humber Dock is now a marina, Princes Dock, which is in the centre of the city and which Larkin would have known, closed in 1968 and is now home to a shopping centre on stilts. Queens Dock, the first and largest of the city's docks, had been filled in in the 1930s and turned into Queens Gardens. And yet still there are these old barges, lying alone or clustered in twos or threes in the mud along the River Hull. Memories of an older time, still familiar but out of reach. They have slipped their names.

[Hull] was famously described by Philip Larkin, who lived here from 1955 to his death in 1985, as "a frightful dump, chilly and smelling of fish." But don’t let that put you off: He fell for the city’s gritty charms, eventually, and wrote about it often. nationalgeographic.com/travel/best-of…

He was a fine gentlemen as well as a radically fine poet. It was an honour to host an evening of his readings at Hull. 103. Bravo Maurice and thanks for being with us.

Larkin’s flip side, Maurice Rutherford has died. They were born within weeks of each other. A son of a ‘town that lets you write’, Maurice is a Hull legend. If you don’t know his poetry, you’re in for a treat. theguardian.com/books/2025/oct…
