Campaign Launched for Canadian-Chinese Heritage Month in Parliament
A national campaign calling for the formal recognition of Canadian-Chinese Heritage Month has officially been launched, led by United Against Hate Canada in partnership with community leaders and Chinese associations.
During a press conference, Marvin Rotrand, Director General of United Against Hate Canada, said the campaign grew out of conversations with members of the Chinese community who feel that Asian Heritage Month in May does not fully reflect the distinct history, struggles, and contributions of Chinese Canadians.
Rotrand noted that Chinese Canadians have been part of Canada’s story since before Confederation and have endured some of the country’s harshest discriminatory policies, including the head tax and the Chinese Exclusion Act, while continuing to build strong roots and make major contributions to Canadian society.
He said the campaign is now seeking support from Members of Parliament, senators, municipal leaders, school commissioners, and community organizations across the country. Organizers confirmed that letters have already been sent to federal and provincial officials, while local leaders in places such as Markham, Vaughan, Toronto, and Edmonton expressed support for the initiative.
Community leader Jimmy Chan also spoke emotionally about the importance of preserving history for future generations, saying a dedicated heritage month would honor the sacrifices of Chinese ancestors, celebrate identity, and strengthen cultural understanding in Canada.
Supporters said the campaign is not a short-term push but the beginning of a longer parliamentary effort aimed at securing national recognition for the Chinese Canadian community.
