All of these were “Whites only” beaches until the early 80s when North Beach became “multiracial”.
I used to swim illegally there most mornings from 0600 to 0645. The guard would only come on duty at 0700. On the rare occasion that he caught me. I would swim north to the “coloured” beach, then walk along the coast back to North Beach to pick up my towel and clothes. Walking on the beach was legal. Entering the water was not.
