Music isn’t formal writing. Songwriting is poetry, & poetry is allowed to bend the rules of language. Case in point, rappers who use English don't always adhere to perfect grammar - they bend grammar as they please. In the context of music, language is malleable
Zeus@MathengeKevin

Musicians also fail to observe Ngeli whenever they do use Swahili and don’t feel irked by that at all. Why, for example, did We Are Nubia choose to sing “hio swali yako” when “hilo swali lako” wouldn’t have affected the flow. I get pissed whenever the song plays.

Kwa wenye mmekuja guns blazing talking about uhuru wa mshairi, there’s a part in my tweet you’re conveniently ignoring: “when… wouldn’t have affected the flow.” Bending the rules imo is allowed if any other phrasing would affect the flow; it doesn’t in this case!

An observation, could be wrong, but the lack of proper Swahili in day to day urban lingo in Kenya is so glaring in how music is written, there is a flow lacking, the lack of employment of stylistic devices makes lyrics blunt .. even in sheng it fails and comes off as vulgar

@odanga_r Kenyans speaking the way they do doesn’t automatically make it correct, which is why I have an issue with it. Also, I don’t got ass to shake.

Because that’s how Kenyans speak Kiswahili. We say, “hio swali yako” or “peleka hio ujinga huko.” We know it should be “swali hilo lako” because the grammatical rule is “nomino+kiashiria” but it doesn’t matter. But also…why are you grammar policing instead of shaking ass?

Re: Hiking Guys hike in trainers or thrifted hiking shoes and no one cares, but we’re supposed to believe there’s elitism in hiking because of Salomons, which aren’t even the most expensive hiking shoes?
Alex Kamau@iamalexkamau

Hot take- the biggest barriers to trying new hobbies in Kenya is elitism. Cyclists geeking over bikes, hikers flexing salomons, car guys making it about status. If your community scares beginners, it’s not growing its gatekeeping
