Today, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. St. Joseph has two feast days on the liturgical calendar. The first is March 19—Joseph, the Husband of Mary. The second is May 1—Joseph, the Worker. “Saint Joseph is a man of great spirit. He is great in faith, not because he speaks his own words, but above all because he listens to the words of the Living God. He listens in silence. And his heart ceaselessly perseveres in the readiness to accept the Truth contained in the word of the Living God,” Pope John Paul II had once said. There is very little about the life of Joseph in Scripture but still, we know that he was the chaste husband of Mary, the foster father of Jesus, a carpenter and a man who was not wealthy. We also know that he came from the royal lineage of King David. We can see from his actions in scripture that Joseph was a compassionate man, and obedient to the will of God. He also loved Mary and Jesus and wanted to protect and provide for them. Since Joseph does not appear in Jesus' public life, at his death, or resurrection, many historians believe Joseph had probably died before Jesus entered public ministry. Joseph is the patron of many things, including the universal Church, fathers, the dying and social justice. ewtn.com/programs/5403-…

When simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment. As a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves, forming self-referential circuits that no longer expose us to reality. We thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another. Feeling threatened by anyone who is different, we grow unaccustomed to encounter and dialogue. In this way, polarization, conflict, fear and violence spread. What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.

At the Meeting for Peace with the Community of Bamenda, Pope Leo gives visible form to his message of reconciliation. From the front steps of Saint Joseph’s Cathedral, he releases white doves—a sign of hope for a region longing for unity and healing. “My dear brothers and sisters, today the Lord has chosen all of us to be the workers who bring peace to this land. Let us all say a prayer to the Lord that peace will truly reign among us. That as we release these white doves, symbol of peace, that God’s peace will be upon all of us, upon this land, and keep us all united in his peace. Praise the Lord!” And the crowd responds: “Alleluia!” Follow the Papal Trip at bit.ly/4tgCoIW

UPDATE | This is the full and exact quote of Pope Leo, delivered in English to journalists aboard his flight to Algeria: "I have no fear of neither the Trump administration nor of speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel. And that’s what I believe I am called to do and what the Church is called to do. We're not politicians. We're not looking to make foreign policy, as he calls it, with the same perspective that he might understand it. But I do believe that the message of the Gospel, “blessed are the peacemakers,” is a message that the world needs to hear today.”

BREAKING: Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane to Algeria on Monday, Pope Leo XIV said: “I think that the people who read will be able to draw their own conclusions: I am not a politician, I have no intention of entering into a debate with him. Rather, let us always seek peace and put an end to wars. I am not afraid of the Trump administration. I speak about the Gospel, I am not a politician. I do not think the message of the Gospel should be abused in the way some people are doing. I will continue to speak out loudly against war, to try to promote peace, multilateral dialogue between states in order to seek the right solution to problems. The message of the Church is the message of the Gospel, blessed are the peacemakers; I do not see my role as that of a politician, I do not want to enter into a debate with him. Too many people are suffering in the world.”

Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first Easter Vigil at St. Peter’s Basilica tonight. The basilica was filled to capacity for the beautiful liturgy—often called the mother of all liturgies—which lasted about three hours. Ten catechumens from different countries were welcomed into the Catholic Church, receiving the sacraments of initiation for the first time.
