My bill that will radically change California’s strategy on the treatment of opioid addiction by transforming California from a state with the most restrictive methadone laws in the country, into a state leading in methadone accessibility passed off the floor of the Assembly unanimously. The bill will ensure that people with opioid addiction are able to access this lifesaving treatment by removing outdated laws that were first crafted during the Vietnam war. Methadone is a highly effective medication that eases the debilitating symptoms of opioid withdrawal for people who have quit drugs like heroin and fentanyl. Unfortunately the state’s many bureaucratic barriers to methadone treatment have left medical professionals hobbled in their fight against the spreading fentanyl crisis. We’ve reached a point where the treatment for opioid addiction is much harder to get than the deadly drugs themselves. Dealers are much better at getting fentanyl and heroin into people’s hands than we are at getting them addiction medication. We have to reverse that entirely if we want to save people’s lives. Currently the state’s stringent regulations far surpass federal guidelines, and require patients to jump through numerous hurdles to access methadone including requiring patients to line up in front of specialized methadone clinics every morning to receive treatment. Drug dealers, aware that people with addiction gather together every morning, often prey on these vulnerable former users as they wait in line. In other countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, methadone is widely available in primary care settings. So anybody walking into their primary care doctor’s office is able to enroll into methadone treatment. When someone is on methadone, they are able to stabilize their lives, they are able to get jobs, they are able to reconnect their families, and that chaotic addiction cycle goes away.

No more wasted space and underutilized buildings contributing to decaying, stagnant downtowns across the state. It's a win all around: more people, more affordable housing, more foot traffic, more support for small businesses, safer more vibrant communities.

@spencercamp @Twolfrecovery @BayAreaCouncil @salvationarmysf The initial version of the bill last year had no % cap, a % was forced into the bill in committee by the Chair. Then the bill was still held last year in a subsequent committee when it had 25%. So this year we got it to the Governor with 10%, and still vetoed.

@xderloin Yes. Permanent housing, which is incredibiy important as part of the set of options that should be available to people if they choose them. Only if they choose them. Denying people in recovery access to recovery housing is a housing barrier. That's not housing first.

@xderloin This is related to funding for permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless people. Permanent supportive housing provides housing + behavioral health care, by design. They aren't separated currently. The "supportive" piece of it is mostly behavioral health.

“That’s a pattern Californians should be deeply angry about,” said @MattHaneySF to @CalMatters about the Legislature’s failure to pass meaningful insurer reforms. Fortunately, AB 512, SB 306, AB 682 & SB 530 are on @CaGovernor’s desk for signature — a huge step for patients. #InsurerAccountability #CaLeg #AB512 #SB306 #AB682 #SB530

@O4SI5 @MarioNawfal Every Republican California legislator that cast a vote supported the bill. It was unanimous in the State Assembly.

Newsom’s tax cut on marijuana might sound like a win for small businesses, but it’s just another step in California’s slide toward normalizing drug culture under the guise of “public safety.” Republicans are right to call this out—lowering barriers to legal weed fuels addiction and emboldens the black market, not curbs it, while doing nothing to tackle the state’s real crises like homelessness and crime spiraling out of control. Haney’s claim about protecting jobs feels like a stretch when Sacramento’s policies keep driving businesses and families out of state. This is just more progressive pandering that prioritizes optics over fixing California’s deeper problems.

🇺🇸 NEWSOM CUTS TAXES ON MARIJUANA California just scrapped a 25% tax hike on legal weed. Governor Gavin Newsom says it's about public safety, consumer access, and letting the legal market grow without getting crushed by the illegal one. While supporters frame it as a win for jobs and small businesses, Republicans are already calling it drug-friendly wokeness that’ll only worsen California’s problems with homelessness, crime, and addiction. California Assembly member Matt Haney: “AB 564 helps level the playing field... protects California jobs, keeps small businesses open, and ensures that our legal cannabis market can grow and thrive the way voters intended.” Source: GovCA

🇺🇸 CALIFORNIA BILL TO REVERSE CANNABIS TAX HIKE HEADS TO GAVIN NEWSOM A bill rolling back California’s 25% cannabis tax increase is now on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk after clearing the legislature. AB564, authored by Assemblymember Matt Haney, would keep the excise tax at 15% through 2028, instead of raising it to 19% in July. Supporters argue high taxes — sometimes topping 45% — are crippling the legal industry while fueling the black market. Lawmakers say keeping rates lower will protect businesses and sustain tax revenue. Source: CBS

@MarioNawfal That'd be an odd thing for Republicans to say. Nearly every single Republican legislator voted for the bill. It was unanimous in the State Assembly. It was a huge bipartisan win to support small businesses.

Thank you Governor @GavinNewsom California’s cannabis economy can bring enormous benefits to our state, but only if our legal industry is given a fair chance to compete against the untaxed and unregulated illegal market.

AB 255 is on the Governor's desk: It would finally allow state funding to go to permanent supportive housing with drug-free recovery. If somebody wants to get off drugs, we should have a placement for them where they can be away from drugs and fully supported in their recovery.

20 years ago heart disease was biggest threat to firefighter health. Today, cancer has replaced heart disease as the biggest killer of firefighters. We have an obligation to ensure they are not exposed to cancer-causing chemicals from very equipment designed to keep them safe.

Every single analysis and study done on this issue has shown that 1 month of security deposit is plenty enough to cover nearly all damages, which are rare. And if damages are greater, tenants are still legally liable. And small landlords are exempt from this law. Come on.

Security deposits are to protect against possible damages. Someone's slightly lower credit score has nothing to do with their likelihood to cause more damages or the possible amount of those damages. Using that as a reason to jack up their move in costs/barriers is wild.

"Charging astronomical security deposits, which previously could be 10k+ for a median 1 bed room, on families simply because they have a slightly lower credit score should not be legal and thankfully no longer is." - Me, some well meaning suit in Sacramento
Paul@LA_Multi_Fam

Convo I have a lot these days. Me: Sorry your credit/income won’t allow us to sign a lease. Applicant: I’ll pay a much bigger deposit. Sorry CA state rules only allow owners to take security deposit equal to 1 month’s rent. Some well meaning suit in Sacramento really thought he was helping the average bloke too :(
