The new fire engine will enhance SFFD's ability to respond to emergencies throughout San Francisco and provide additional resources for regional and statewide deployments during wildfires, natural disasters, and other largescale incidents. As one of California's premier all-hazards emergency response agencies, the San Francisco Fire Department regularly deploys personnel and apparatus through the California Fire and Rescue Mutual Aid System to assist communities throughout the state. "Public safety is a shared responsibility, and partnerships such as this help ensure that our firefighters have the tools and resources necessary to protect lives and property," said Chief Dean Crispen, San Francisco Fire Department. "This donation from PG&E represents an investment not only in San Francisco's emergency response capabilities but also in California's broader mutual aid system, which communities rely upon during their greatest times of need." The new apparatus will be equipped to respond to structure fires, medical emergencies, rescue incidents, disaster operations, and wildfire deployments. In addition to serving San Francisco neighborhoods daily, the engine will be available for deployment to support communities across California when requested through established mutual aid channels. The donation was facilitated through the City and County of San Francisco's approved behested payment process. Behested payments are charitable contributions made at the request of elected officials for public purposes and community benefit programs and are subject to applicable disclosure and transparency requirements established by state and local law. Recent actions by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors have further strengthened oversight and transparency requirements surrounding such contributions. “Safety is at the heart of everything we do,” said Jake Zigelman, Vice President for PG&E Bay Area Region. “We’re exceptionally proud of our partnership with SFFD, which spans more than 100 years. I wanted to share an update on yesterday’s incident in the San Francisco Bay: As of now, the San Francisco Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard are continuing search and rescue operations for missing individuals. Indications are that there are three people still missing. Search teams are using technology like thermal imaging, tide prediction, and modeling to supports their efforts. Our first responders have been able to rescue 17 people from the water. Unfortunately, one person did not survive. But the work our first responders have done so far today has been nothing short of heroic, and they are showing incredible courage as their work continues. I want to thank our Fire Department and Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and our partners from the Oakland Police Department, Tiburon Fire Department, Richmond Police Department, Southern Marin Fire Protection District, and the individuals on private vessels for stepping up to support these efforts. Thank you to the American Red Cross and the San Francisco Human Services Agency who are assisting those impacted.

The San Francisco Fire Department, along with Pacific Gas & Electric (PGE), will conduct a multi-agency safety drill focused on utility emergency responses. The drill aims to improve coordination and enhance our ability to provide immediate services and responses to our community during disasters. PGE executives will also announce a donation that will enable the purchase of new fire apparatus in the future. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE San Francisco Fire Department Multi-Agency Water Rescue Response — San Francisco Bay SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — On July 14, 2026, at approximately 3:37 p.m. PDT, multiple 911 callers reported a vessel in distress on the San Francisco Bay. Multiple public safety agencies responded with ground and water assets, including the San Francisco Police Department, San Francisco Fire Department, United States Coast Guard, Oakland Police Department, Tiburon Fire Department, and Southern Marin Fire Protection District, as well as commercial and recreational vessels in the area. San Francisco Police Department Marine 3 was the first public safety vessel to arrive on scene and confirmed that a 49-foot cabin cruiser named Volare, documented out of Stockton, California, was in distress, with steam that callers misinterpreted as smoke. Marine 3 confirmed multiple subjects requiring rescue as additional public safety vessels from the San Francisco Fire Department and allied agencies arrived on scene. A total of 19 individuals were reported aboard the vessel. Seventeen people were rescued from the water. One of those rescued required life-saving measures and, unfortunately, succumbed to injuries sustained in this incident. Three others were transported to a local hospital and are in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. A dog aboard the vessel was also confirmed deceased. Per witness statements, three individuals remain missing at this time, bringing the total to 20 persons in this incident. As of 8:30 p.m. PDT, the United States Coast Guard and San Francisco Fire Department are continuing search and rescue operations for the three individuals who remain missing. These teams are using technologies such as thermal imaging, tide prediction, and modeling to help direct search efforts. Those affected were assisted on scene by American Red Cross and Human Services Agency with food, blankets and family reunification.
