@vicgoddard This captures the constant balancing and juggling of responsibilities perfectly. I think those 5 points you’ve listed are spot on advice too. Thank you and look after yourself sir.

Making Every Lesson Count by Shaun Allison & Andy Tharby is without a doubt, a brilliant teaching & learning book. It's one I revisit & regularly recommend to others. Getting to the heart of expert teaching in every classroom! 👏

Can anybody host me for a Teaching Assistants /HLTA training morning? 9-12. (I’ll repeat the same session then 12.00-3.00. £50 a TA. (£75 for 2 from same school.) Effective, practical strategies to support TAs with classroom support & intervention delivery.

Ooop north visiting friends and watching my boy play sport. A bit of a shock to turn up to my hotel last night to see NEU banners everywhere. Yep staying in the hotel in Harrogate that their conference is in!

When was the last time you let yourself be a beginner? Most people think mastery is about talent. But the real secret? It’s about tolerance. - Tolerance for imperfection - Tolerance for the discomfort of not knowing - Tolerance for the awkwardness of getting it wrong before you get it right. Look at any skill you’ve mastered—reading, driving, even walking. You were once terrible at all of them. But you kept going. The moment you stop fearing failure is the moment growth accelerates. The best performers aren’t the ones who never fail. They’re the ones who fail, learn, and try again—faster and more often than anyone else. Mastery isn’t a destination—it’s a cycle. The sooner you embrace it, the faster you grow.

Years ago, when I was a senior leader, I was disparagingly called ‘bookish’ by my headteacher. He didn’t mean it in a good way. It was a dig at me beginning to read more about what works in education, and me questioning. I’m now a bookish principal and I wear this with pride
