This temporary appointment, which is reserved for a Protestant, involves lecturing to the brothers and students (I am lecturing on Aquinas, Calvin, Protestant Scholastics, and Barth), leading soirées with guest scholars and the Dominicans, participating in Thomistic Institute conferences, writing my own projects on Aquinas, etc.
On this side of modernism, conservative Catholics and Protestants must come together around Aquinas. But rather than stare at each other and the impasse over our differences, we must stand side by side with Aquinas as we face outward, together giving an answer to the metaphysical challenges of our secular age. Few are so equipped for this task as the Dominican Order, in large part due to their nearly millennia old ability to rest confidently in the First Principles of Thomism, a confidence that then galvanizes them to engage a secular culture. We have much to learn from them, and we will be much stronger to stand with them on these First Truths as the culture becomes more secular still.
