@MarkOgden_ @pbsportswriter Enjoyed this, Mark. But (and I appreciate you know this as much as I do) 'football wanting it' is a tad broad. All involved in professional football weren't pushing for VAR. The broader analysis also sidesteps the nuances of/within this incarnation.

Football wanted VAR and now everyone complains when it gets a big decision right. You can’t have it both ways — and that applies to Mikel Arteta as much as anyone espn.com/soccer/story/_…

An incredible fact about the greatest full-back (bar Kyle Walker) of the last 10 years. If Portugal had a strong manager, and were 'over' Ronaldo, they would be a serious contender this year. They have class across the field... Bar No. 9.

@daviddownie17 Attitude - and the obsession with noting the limits of his (pretty good) squad - must change for a club like Everton to move to the next level. A level EFC sat at for 60 years. Football, as Bournemouth have shown, is only partly about players. Success depends on how they're used.

@daviddownie17 See the tweet that followed, Dave. There is no guarantee connected to that musing. The only guarantee is that he will improve players who graft, chase and doggedly follow the rigid plan - see Garner and (the improved, but highly limited) Keane. Creatives will struggle to thrive.

Season over. Deserves to be. Miss that many chances, defend that poorly for their goals. Fucking manager taking our worst player off today with 2 minutes to go. #EFC

@daviddownie17 Although I'm not suggesting Moyes' approach will get Everton there. Not when there are giants like Brentford, Bournemouth and Fulham to compete against. 👀

This sums up the views of many Evertonians. Some (away from the club) say to be grateful. Many of those close to the club are calling for change.

@daviddownie17 Mate we've dropped 6 points in the last 4 games thanks to moyes ingame management. Cried we want european football all season and he's cost us it. Will be more monday night football next season now while we watch a brentford or brighton win the conference leagus. Needs to go

@rorydavies66 Stats do not tell you who's controlled an opponent through their fast reactions, who has made the right runs or played the right (forward/progressive) passes from deep positions. Stats add something, but often are for those who don't really understand the nuances of football.

I differ from Henry here, and on many other opinions. The game's about quality, skill, strategy, focus, endeavour, teamwork - many things. Declan Rice has excelled this season in every one of the key aspects. Fernandes has risen, but also floundered. A distant fourth, for me.
Henry Winter@henrywinter

Congratulations to Bruno Fernandes voted Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year. Superb for Manchester United in a tough season. I voted Declan Rice for driving Arsenal to within touching distance now of the Premier League & Champions League. The game’s about glory.

As far as apologies are concerned, that is crap. It may not be enough to #Tchouameni summer. #Valverde
Fabrizio Romano@FabrizioRomano

🚨 OFFICIAL: Aurelien Tchouameni statement to apologize to all Madridistas. ““What happened this week in training is 𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 — I say this while thinking about the example we are expected to set for young people, whether in football or at school. No matter who is right or wrong, we should always look for the calmest solution to resolve a conflict”. “Above all, 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐛. I know the fans, the staff, my teammates, the management, everyone is deeply disappointed by the way this season has unfolded. But frustration cannot excuse everything”. “These incidents, even if they can happen in any dressing room, are not worthy of Real Madrid. Especially since Real Madrid is the most talked-about club in the world”. “Anyway, now is no longer the time to figure out who did what, who said what, or who was right or wrong. I acknowledge the club’s sanction and I accept it”. “We remain family, with disagreements at times but we must always put our objectives above everything else. 𝐈 𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩, and I also want to extend my apologies to all Madridistas”.

@johnmcdonnellMP desperate to do any media round he can. He does come from a position of substantial experience in election defeats - having been one of the senior figures who presided over Labour’s biggest general election defeat since 1935.

Sir Keir Starmer would be "gone by now" if Andy Burnham was in parliament, says Labour MP John McDonnell. Burnham, the Mayor of Manchester, was blocked from standing in a by-election by Labour's executive committee. 🔗 trib.al/0aJJHsY 📺 Sky 501

@lewis_goodall The problem is that those who want him out are one-eyed. They feel a Corbyn-style extremist can work in the modern world. Starmer fails because he is realistic and more centrist. But really 30% of the population want to gamble on Socialism... And life being like a Hovis advert.

I’m intrigued by the argument that Labour can’t change the leader as the Tories did. Does anyone think it was a bad idea when May was replaced by Johnson- when he won an 80 seat majority? Or that Johnson should have been replaced after Partygate? Or that Truss should have been replaced for being Truss? In each case, it minimised political damage.

BIG. Expect the 'lower status' player to leave or be forced to issue a public apology. That would be Tchouameni. Although that would change if Valverde (recent captain) was the significant aggressor.
