The Connecticut Valley Historical Society built the stately William Pynchon Building on the Quadrangle to house its collection of artifacts and records. The dedication took place on December 21, 1927. In more recent times, the building became the Dr. Seuss Museum.

@SpfldHistorian My grandmother worked at the CT Valley Historical Museum (now the Dr. Seuss Museum) at the quadrangle. She is pictured on the left working the war bonds booth at one of the USO events.

During the war, the museum worked hand in hand with the USO to sponsor dances (in the main court area), concerts, snack bar, movies, games and plays. An annual “I am an American” celebration with a parade and related activities was held on the quadrangle grounds.

In the midst of the Great Depression, James and Emma Gray gave us beauty and history in the form of our Museum of Fine Arts. Opening day in 1933 met their purpose in sharing invaluable art that put us on par with big city resources. Soldiers of WWII found a USO home here.

@SpfldHistorian My uncle Earl was Asst Dir and often walked about the museum with a boa constrictor around his neck.

Civil engineer Daniel L. Harris (1818-1879) collected antiquities during a tour of Europe. When he returned, he met in 1859 with other men who foresaw the value of public display of such treasures. They laid out plans to start small in a single room. Our science museum was born!

I’m currently going through the hiring process for my next position in the Army and here’s my current thought: If you send me an email at 10PM to tell me how rewarding a position is, there is a 100% chance I will not reply back or find that position rewarding.
