To exploit man-marking, drive forward into open space to invite pressure, committing an opponent to press the ball and leave their marker behind. Here are a couple of examples of how dribbling into open space could have freed a teammate to advance forward.

When you drive to one side, try passing to the opposite direction as the defense will likely shift towards the ball. Interested in personalized game analysis? Send me a DM for more details.

@joecampos Yes, very much so. I’m instilling this mentality into my young team. Slowly but surely it’s improving. Why is that?

@MattShutz It is., but it can be done. One small detail is that our player pressing quickly was the #9. Purely by position profile, the #9 is often the most difficult player in which to instill this type of pressing reaction/behavior. But a #9who reacts this way is extremely valuable.

For high performance youth teams in a Positional Play game model, shortening the transition times is an important detail requiring consistent training and development of a pressing mentality valuing defensive work . Measuring the time to recover possession is one way to gauge progress. In this group stage match at National Cup XXIII, the teams are tied 1-1 with just minutes to go. A promising attack by my Valencia CF Academy M07 team stalls when a pass is made behind a teammate. 2 seconds after the pass, the opponent has possession. 1 second later, we regain possession. Time to recovery is 3 seconds. (That is very good!) 5 seconds later the game winning goal is scored. Total time elapsed from bad pass to goal is 8 seconds. Without the immediate, aggressive press, the goal is likely not scored. Develop a pressing mentality! @VCFSeattle @Academia_VCF

Columbus Crew Build Up DF 3rd: -Patient in a 3-4-2-1 trying to find the free man between lines centrally. -Attacking MF & CF often interchange positions to create confusion creating free player. -If they can’t play short, play direct to one of their WBs, making run in-behind.

Opposition Analysis- Columbus Crew Middle 3rd Buildup ✅ Objective is to be patient to use their numerical advantage centrally to find the free player. ✅ If unable to play centrally, they switch play to their WB. ✅ A free player will trigger runs behind by CFs, AMs, or WBs.

Crew Opposition Analysis: Crew 5-2-2-1/5-2-3 mid-block .Changes to back 4 when WB jumps off the backline to press. WB often press when the distance is too big, leaving space behind. Center & weak side half-space can be exploited with their 2 DM, & weak-side AM defending high.

Opposition Analysis Video: Columbus Crew Transition from Attack to Defense: ✅Both DMs tend to get too close to the ball (in wide areas) to provide support, leaving opening space to exploit centrally.  ✅Space to exploit behind the weak-side WB, who stays high and wide.

Players: Mental rehearsal is an every day thing! 1% of your day is about 15 minutes…take 15 minutes each day to image… -you at your best -your dream game -the style in which you want to play -being a great team mate -how your coach wants you to play (related to their game model) -your tactical responsibilities -the challenges you may face against the opposition (or a specific opposition) Create a blueprint on your mind and through your body during pockets of two and three minutes here and there… A blueprint…recreated daily…can go a long way to developing game awareness, game knowledge, meta-thinking (reflecting on your game), readiness to perform, in-game self-regulation (to name a few advantages of using mental rehearsal)
