St Louis is a river city like Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Louisville. All of these cities are similar dynamics and weird underperformance on conventional growth metrics relative to their urban assets. A possible culprit: very parochial and insular cultures.

I remain firm in my belief the Gulf Coast recreational fishing fleet could open the straight in 2-3 days. 30% of the big center consoles/sportfishers are owned by someone in oil+gas or a related field, anyway. Maybe 50-60% on La. and Texas coasts.

Off I-40 somewhere between Memphis and Little Rock is the Louisiana Purchase State Park. Driven past it a thousand times. Finally stopped there last weekend. This is place of great power.
It's very small park that consists of an elevated walkway leading you through a headwater swamp to a stone monument.
The stone marker sits on the spot where the 5th Principal Meridian and the Baseline survey lines intersect, the initial point from which all surveys of property acquired through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 originated.
It was only after this point was established that land grants could be issued, settlers, prospectors and ranchers could stake a claim, or towns could be platted.
The point was lost to time until 1921 when during a resurveying operation of the three Arkansas counties it intersects, surveyors discovered marked "witness" trees from the initial 1815 survey.
Realizing the significance of the spot, the Daughters of the American Revolution erected the commemorative stone marker in 1926.
An informational plaque in front of the marker reads, "Here the settlement of the American West began."

@RolandGunnTN Mississippian who has been in Nashville for a decade here. “Contractor Americans” is a great description of so many successful (mostly) suburbanites all over the U.S., particularly in the South. I’ve described this to friends a lot, but not with that succinct of a term.

In a lot of the South we see a dynamic where “contractor Americans” form a new “planter class.” There is a set of hicklibs who got better grades in high school, maybe even went to state college, but are now underemployed or maybe high school teacher, who make considerably less money than the Contractor class who absolutely despise and resent them.
