People-pleasing starts with wanting to do small favours to win people’s approval and feel good or worthy. The truth is we need only seek to feel worthy and good in God's eyes, not man's!
Paul is one Jew who converted in such a dramatic way that he left behind all the old ways, cultural practices and traditions of Judaism and accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ brought to him by the Saviour himself on the road to Damascus.
He knew that no amount of the old ways would get him, you or I closer to God than by the mercy and grace of the Lord's atonement! You can’t work to please people and God at the same time.
The Greek word ‘peithó’ means ‘having won over, persuaded, convinced, gained the trust of and seeking the favour of’. Hence we should only seek the favour of God and not of man.
There is a difference between trying to please others so you look good or are popular with people and doing good to people because you want to please God. The latter is what should motivate you more than any other thing or person.
If you are being led by the things of this world or doing things to please the people of this world, then you cannot be a servant of Christ.
When your heart is turned towards doing things for God, rather than for men, then your motivation is pure.
