Here's a bit of a primer on the Windows text console! The console API / console host side is what owns the screen buffer, input queue, window state, scrolling, selection, VT parsing, and classic Win32 console behavior. In modern Windows, that host is primarily the process conhost.exe. Windows Console Host is the traditional terminal host for Command Prompt, PowerShell, and other character-mode apps, while ConPTY is the newer pseudoconsole layer that lets other terminal apps host console sessions as well. The terminal UI / renderer may be different from the console host. The newer Windows Terminal is a separate terminal app that can host console sessions, tabs, shells, WSL, SSH, and more. It uses the GPU to render text, which is a big part of why it feels so snappy. Windows has (at least) three shells and profiles, but they're all going to be using the same console API underneath.
