Want to know how entho-religious diversity in the police affects crime and security in the Middle East? You can find out by ordering my book! Use the code "NANES21" by the end of October for a discount. cambridge.org/9781108839051

1/4 Just got the cover design for my book, due later this year with @CambridgeUP! It's exciting to see 8 years of work come to fruition! In Policing for Peace, I ask how the inclusion of previously-marginalized groups in the police affects politics.

There's lots of talk about how better bollards in New Orleans could have stopped the terror attack. But as Trevor Bachus and I write, physical barriers alone just shift the nature of political violence; they can't fully prevent it. doi.org/10.1177/002200… (DM for ungated link)

ok weird: there was a line at the polling station so I told the officer I have Delta Diamond and precheck but he said I just have to wait. Anyone know what’s going on?

@rjschoner @AmericanAir @AmericanAir uses AI to provide an initial response to most complaints. If you respond to their response, supposedly it goes to a real human. Whether that will actually accomplish anything...🤷‍♂️

Why is airline customer service the absolute worst out everything? Looking at you @AmericanAir After chat for 2+ hours unable to remedy issue, submitted a complaint online and got an email very soon (!) w/ absolutely nothing and just links to chat again and terms & conditions.

Hey #AcademicTwitter (or what's left of it): Does anyone's campus internet block Dropbox? Our IT dept has decided to do this for "security," and we're trying to get a sense for how unusual this is.

There are a couple thousand historians in higher ed (or so) and only ~10 elections Lichtman has made "correct" guesses for. If all the historians made completely random guesses about the 10 elections, three historians would still get all 10 results right.

A trend I’ve noticed over the past few years on faculty search committees: an increasing number of established assistant profs applying for new assistant prof positions. Has anyone else noticed this and do you have thoughts why this may be?

Even at places where teaching is supposed to be a big component, the near impossibility of evaluating teaching quality out in the wild means that aside from the <5% who win awards or completely fail to show up, everyone's teaching gets evaluated about the same.

I see we're doing "my stats software is better than your stats software" again, on the basis that a human person used the software incorrectly. 🙄

I'm really concerned that my assignments are making students sick. The rate of illness on days that a student is scheduled to give a presentation is so much higher than on other days!

Attending a faculty council meeting as both the political science rep (my usual gig) and a proxy for my colleague, the social science rep. I'll be voting with both hands.
