UNC Charlotte ranks No. 17 in the nation and No. 1 in NC on SmartAsset’s 2026 list of America’s Best Value Public Universities. The ranking reflects what matters most: affordability, graduation and strong career outcomes. smartasset.com/data-studies/b…

@TrumanLab I know an excellent postdoc looking. But she’s trained as a synthetic chemist who wants to learn more biology. Would you be willing to train her? Superb background.

@arjunrajlab @AdamRochussen Past productivity demonstrates the feasibility of carrying out the good ideas proposed, especially for major grants like an R01. For pilot studies/seed grants then less so.

"Whichever way you slice it, publication history doesn’t mean anything about whether your current ideas are any good." I think there is where we just fundamentally disagree :). I think a lot of people can write down ideas that sound like they are good. Far fewer can actually execute. Regarding my aversion to the system—I think it's more that I believe it to be far less meritocratic. But I suppose time will tell.

As a trainee, I much prefer the message: “if you come up with good ideas & test them rigorously, it will work out”, which is exactly what this grants scoring change will mean. No longer considering “track record” seems like a good change that will favour younger scientists.
Arjun Raj@arjunrajlab

So… doing a good job at science doesn’t count for anything anymore. What’s the point then? How do I look a trainee in the face and say “In this career, if you do strong work over time and keep publishing, it will work out”?

@p_maverick_b @ATinyGreenCell This should warrant a class action lawsuit. The money, time and effort wasted on antibodies not acting in the way they are purportedly work

We're so used to reagents being unreliable in biology that many people probably bought these antibodies, spent weeks troubleshooting them, and then marked them as "bad" without reporting back to Thermo... We just accept that you have to sift through multiple antibodies every time you design a new assay
nature@Nature

Catalogue entries for more than 100 antibodies sold by the research services and supply company Thermo Fisher Scientific contain images that have apparently been manipulated, according to a pair of science sleuths. go.nature.com/4wZqGEE

Can someone start a journal called “Cell Atlases” so that the rest of the journals can go back to publishing interesting things?

So many new STEM PhDs pumping out 20+ low impact papers/year. ECRs over 50, and they train their students to do the same. We need to stop rewarding this behaviour as we are the ones responsible. It's us who sit on the awards, promotion, membership, and hiring committees.
