An eighteenth-century mystery – longish thread. While I was feverish with covid, I bought a random book. (1/16)

nybooks.com/online/2025/08… With customary precision and elegance (how does he make it look so bloody easy?) Charles Nicholl writes about Mrs Shakspaire for the New York Review of Books.

This was a lot of fun! Also the trip to the desert island at the end. Apologies in advance to the seagulls.

NEW EPISODE: A forgotten letter addressed to “Good Mrs Shakspaire” may rewrite what we thought we knew about Anne Hathaway—and where she lived. This week on That Shakespeare Life, @MatthewSteggle shares how this tiny archival discovery might place Anne in London, right alongside her famous husband. 🎧 Listen now → cassidycash.com/ep380

@marclauritsen Well… IMHO not much will budge that. Eg if main claim's right, then it’s all more data points for his time in London, links to Shoreditch, links to printer Richard Field… but all could be seen as part of the clever conspiracy. Arguing it is like nailing jelly to a wall.

@MatthewSteggle Has your paper been published yet? I would love a link to read it (but couldn't find it on the journal website). Anything that enhances our understanding of Anne Shakespeare's life is very exciting.

Delighted to have some Shakespeare work of mine feature in Guardian today. More info in Bluesky (place also works really well and is not owned by a twit). theguardian.com/culture/2025/a…

@rjma_uk Robbie, this is terrible to hear. Nicola was such an amazing person, and I am thinking of you and your colleagues.

Devastated by the loss of my friend and colleague Nicola Verdon. Nicola was a wonderful academic - an expert in her field, a supportive colleague, and someone who cared deeply about her students.

@starcrossed2018 @eoin_price I was going to say Cynthia’s Revels, but not kidding! (I was also going to specify the Q version). But Arden would be good too.

Life update: wonderful and actually enjoyable PhD viva with Anna Marie Roos & Felicity James this afternoon, passed (astonishingly) with no corrections. I am one happy boy. #PhDone

@corylus Trinity is nice. It’s on the smaller side, but it has among the biggest gardens, and a reputation for being more laid back.

People in my phone who might have knowledge of Oxford University. If one was going to the open day in a hugely preliminary 'this is what a (v atypical) university looks like' way, which would be a couple of good colleges to look round? Assume maths- or chem- adjacent subject.
