@amypretzel Thats why you sit less than 50 ft from the factory with a white board. Drastically cuts down on emails

the distance between a render and a working part is like 200 emails with the factory. "this material is 16 weeks out." "that radius needs to be 2mm for the endmill." "this tolerance will triple your cost." most of the job is invisible...

Exciting news - GPT-Image-2 by @OpenAI has claimed the #1 spot across all Image Arena leaderboards! A clean sweep with a record-breaking +242 point lead in Text-to-Image - the largest gap we’ve seen to date. - #1 Text-to-Image (1512), +242 over #2 (Nano-banana-2 with web-search aka gemini-3.1-flash-image) - #1 Single-Image Edit (1513), +125 over #2 (Nano-banana-pro aka gemini-3-pro-image) - #1 Multi-Image Edit (1464), +90 over #2 (Nano-banana-2) No model has dominated Image Arena with margins this wide. Huge congratulations to @OpenAI on this major breakthrough in image generation! More performance breakdowns by category in the thread below.

@Eggs_and_Jakey @connorkapoor A few of your most impressive projects should include a deep dive, but you don’t need to show it on every one. Show breadth of work and a few key examples of depth of work

I’ve been interviewing a lot of folks over the last few weeks for entry level engineering roles; If there was one piece of advice I could give to everyone in a engineering related field You NEED to have examples of things you’ve built, with your hands. Senior projects are usually kind of bullshit and do not make a portfolio.

@Xaraphim I had tie bar nuts for a hydraulic car crusher cylinder give me a similar issue. We were converting it into a hydrostatic test chamber. A 24ft steel breaker bar was not enough to crack those loose. We had to order the ingersoll rand 2100 ftlb torque wrench and run a 1in air line

me talking to dean today me:*opens engine cross section on his desk, crashing out over a new detail i spotted in the drawing that i can’t find mentioned anywhere* me: “can i resort to violence yet” dean: “you will not be cutting anything off, this engine was assembled therefore it can be torn apart” me: “but mr DEAN, how would you even get this off, the manual doesn’t even talk about this” dean: “let me tell you a story” *dean tells story of his days as a 747 flight engineer , he was called in during the middle of the night to help resolve an electrical fault they were having, the captain and other flight engineer had the electrical wiring diagram laid out and could not understand the fault the dean looked at the drawing for 30 seconds and said “the manual is wrong”, the polarity of this *insert component* is wrong. captain and first officer shocked that the manual was wrong and the dean caught it so quickly* dean: “now how do you think i was able to diagnose that system so quickly” me: “you saw the issue before?” dean: “yes, hands on experience is the only way to understand these systems, the people who design these engines can’t assemble them, the only people who know how to tear these apart are the ones who maintain them. keep in mind that this engine is from the 60s, manuals from this time were not flawless, you have already gotten further than i thought possible. i’ve never seen anyone tear down a turbine without proper tooling” me: “so no torch?” dean: “no torch, you will figure this out”

@NathanBuilds Interesting. I’ve never experienced that and have some _very_ long lived ABS prints (10+ years operational museum physical interactive exhibits). I’ll look into it

@MatthewTavares I’ve had some ABS parts suffer from creep rupture. Very strange, the whole thing worked fine with press fit bearings, the. When I pulled the part out of a drawer years later, the whole thing crumbled around the bearings.

Is it true that PETG has higher toughness than PLA? My personal experience from real world failures says PLA is tougher, and I spot checked a few datasheets which say the same thing. But if you google it, the vast majority of forum posts and blogs say PETG is tougher.
David Bar@observie

PETG is nice: 1. It doesn't smell. Both ABS and PLA too honestly smell too bad for me to keep working in the same room 2. It's not as brittle as PLA. You can actually use it for some dynamic system testing 3. Better heat resistance than PLA: it won't warp or soften as easily I'm not sure why PLA is perceived as a beginner friendly go-to filament. I'd prefer PETG if only for the lack of smell

Now that we've scaled up, we are realizing the benefits of having cash to deploy. Funny thing to say, I suppose. But this year, we've tripled our ads and marketing budget. We are also opening Factory 2 in [REDACTED], and we'll do that while adding zero net new debt this year.
Caleb (OSH Cut)@CalebChamberla6

OSH Cut raised $0. Eight years ago we started with just $250k, funded primarily by a HELOC on my home. Just enough for the down-payment on our first laser. Today, we employ 120 people and are growing faster than ever. Great things to come!
