EXCLUSIVE: Jon Burrows & Doug Beattie are potentially on a collision course over Naomi Long's Justice Bill. Burrows has asked his Upper Bann MLA to withdraw an amendment raising the minimum age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 12. Beattie has refused. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/politics/…

This is peak UUP. There is a belief that Doug was lucky to get elected last time around which entirely ignores the fact that they ran two candidates and split the constituency in two. Had they simply ran Doug alone in '22 he'd have been the 3rd candidate safely elected. It's...1/
Suzanne Breen@SuzyJourno

@jonnyharvey11 I think Doug & the association (although divided on who the candidate should be) agreed that running 1 person in Upper Bann was best - given there's only 0.9 of a quota - but the assoc was asked by the party centrally to revisit its original decision & last night decided to run 2

This is wrong. If we define the right to vote on the basis of employment status, we are essentially saying enfranchisement is dependent on financial worth, and a stone’s throw away from the old system of the business vote.

🗣️ 'We need a radical plan to tackle the welfare state. And funnily enough, this one was proposed by the man who invented it' Michael Deacon argues the unemployed should be stripped of their right to vote ⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/05/1…

Your tweet is straight-up misleading performative nonsense dressed up as activism. Jon Burrows never “dismissed” the independent review into the Katie Simpson murder investigation. He’s never denied the serious, shocking failings it exposed in that specific case. He’s publicly called the PSNI’s original handling “catastrophic errors” since 2024, saying red flags were missed and monsters like Jonathan Creswell walked free for far too long. What you’re doing demanding he grovel and “apologise to Nuala McAllister” simply for speaking his own professional experience is pure tribal point-scoring and manufactured outrage, not genuine accountability. Let’s stick to the actual facts from Dr Jan Melia’s independent review (May 2026, commissioned by the Department of Justice): It examined the PSNI’s initial botched handling of Katie Simpson’s death in 2020 (initially treated as suicide until later confirmed as murder by Jonathan Creswell). Key failures included: officers failed to seriously consider coercive control or domestic abuse; Katie’s lived experience as a victim was completely disregarded; clear warning signs were ignored; force protocols were treated as optional; and the killer’s account was wrongly privileged over the victim’s. The review specifically criticised dismissive language used by officers, including former DCI John Caldwell, who referred to the perpetrator as a “bad boy” or “philanderer.” It stated this kind of language “trivialised male aggression”, “undermined the credibility of female victims”, and was “misogynistic because it protects male perpetrators at the expense of female victims”. The review described such language as “normalised banter” in this context and concluded that this case exposed “institutional misogyny” and “systemic failures”. The PSNI Chief Constable has fully accepted these findings, publicly apologised for the “profound failure”, and committed to zero tolerance: any officer displaying misogyny “would quickly lose their jobs.” That’s real accountability happening. Now here’s what @JonBurrowsMLA former senior PSNI officer and Head of Internal Discipline/Professional Standards actually said on Nolan: “I’ve never heard misogynistic language in the police service, not for a long time, and if I did, it was challenged.” He clarified: “Nobody used those remarks openly in front of me.” In his discipline role he read the reports, and “where there was evidence, people were recommended for dismissal.” He was unequivocal: “Any police officer who is involved in or who uses misogynistic language, there’s no place for them within the police service.” He supports sacking offenders immediately and says the PSNI must learn the lessons from the Simpson case. This isn’t denial or dismissal. It’s an honest counterpoint from the man who actually policed the standards, pushing back against the blanket “the entire force is rotten” narrative. One deeply flawed investigation — however awful — doesn’t mean every officer casually tolerated misogyny, especially under someone whose job was to root it out. Matthew, this isn’t “calling out” anyone it’s manufacturing a scandal because Burrows wouldn’t play the usual political game or bow to Alliance. The Katie Simpson case was an absolute tragedy that exposed real, fixable failings that cost a young woman her life. Those need urgent reform. But turning one investigation into “Jon Burrows must apologise to Nuala McAllister” is exactly the kind of cheap, tribal nonsense that distracts from actual change. Personal experience isn’t denial — it challenges the overreach of the blanket “institutional” label. @JonBurrowsMLA is the straightest cop I know no spin, no virtue-signalling, just straight-talking integrity from decades actually enforcing the rules inside the PSNI. Keep his name out of your mouth unless you’re prepared to engage with what he actually said, not this straw-man rubbish you created for likes and retweets. Focus on real reform not cheap headlines
