One of the things I love about Axios is their illustrations. They hired some damn good visual experts and I always said that before, during and after my time with Axios.

Justina Miles nearly stole the spotlight from Rihanna last year with her American Sign Language halftime show performance at the #SuperBowl — which ushered (pun intended) in a new wave of awareness, but solved really nothing of her everyday challenges. With the help of an interpreter, Rorri Burton, my Axios Visuals colleague @MauraLosch and I talked to Justina ahead of tonight’s game about what that moment meant for the Deaf community and what pressures the community still faces from the hearing world. [During the interview, we also learned that she had to do her own hair and makeup for the show, and she bought her own dress ($40 from Fashion Nova).] Miles is in the process of building a nursing school and space for the Deaf community — but because of the accessibility issues that she faces, she’s trying to teach herself everything online to avoid the headaches of miscommunication. She still needs to go to the bank to set up an account, for example. Separately, Shoshana Gordon, Tory Lysik and Maura analyzed the screen time that ASL performers have received during the national anthem — and it has gone down over the years even as broadcast technology has improved. This was such a fun project and I’m so grateful to be on a team that celebrates new/different/weird ideas. 🥰 Ok that’s it, give the story a read and then start squashing these bugs!!

We assembled and photographed using similar lighting, and then cleaned up the photographs in photoshop before beginning to digitally build the chart. The whole team offered critiques and so much valuable insight in finishing up one of our first made-by-illustrators charts.
