Underrated thing to do during the World Cup if you live in a metropolis is to go to a local bar from whatever country is playing to watch the games, I’m in a German bar right now and I’ll be heading to a Japanese bar later

@Hesfivefootfour Another example of how messy the format is, the fact that teams either play second placed teams x2 or a third place team followed by a group winner in the first two knockout rounds sort of balances things out, but it still feels wholly unsatisfying

Canada haven’t been great but they’ve at least been rewarded for forcing the issue. Not even sure what South Africa were *trying* to do in this match.

@Thfcaditya_v4 I know you can't change fixtures at the last minute but there's no way you couldn't have predicted that Canada would not finish first in a group that also had Switzerland in it.

@Brianc_56 Yeah. There are 7 knockout stage debutants in this tournament, but Cape Verde are the only ones that haven’t featured at the equivalent stage (ie, the others have all played at World Cups featuring 32 teams or fewer). However, we are guaranteed to see at least one ro16 debutant.

As with every expansion to 24/48-team tournaments, the issue is never about quality, it's about the arithmetic of getting to 16/32. There's just too many problems. A 64-team World Cup shouldn't be rushed through but there's no good reason not to make the Euros 32 teams.
