Republicans are desperate to push through as many gerrymandered maps as possible because they just realized Texas screwed up in a massive way. They rushed the process, and as a result, drew maps that looked good for Republicans on the surface but actually benefit Democrats. They overdiluted strong Republican areas with large numbers of Hispanic voters, assuming they would continue to hold onto those votes (since Trump won the Hispanic vote in Texas in 2024). Originally, the maps were expected to deliver 5 new Republican seats. Now, they’re only projected to add 2. By November, it may be a fight just to gain 1. There’s a real chance these maps could actually backfire and help Democrats pick up more seats than they hold now.
