A powerful learning experience is indeed personalized, but it's also *personal* -- grounded in relationships with peers to collaborate with and mentors to guide you.

In the drive for "personalizing learning" have we become too focused on the role of technology and not focused enough on the role of other humans?

@CarynTan29 I try to be careful with the term "personalization" in learning because it means so many different things to different people. Platforms can help enable mediums for how learners best engage. They can also identify connections among cohort that learners wouldn't do on their own

@MaximizeEDU I am hearing an emphasis on personalisation - would love to expand: - platform choice, its constraint/potential for communities/communication - understanding individual/collective learner persona, augmenting teaching/learning to optimise for each cohort

@CarynTan29 In terms of 'help you need' you have far more resources online for getting feedback, finding collaborators as a learner, getting the relevant data on learning. Just as true for a teacher. Definitely needs further segmentation along the lines of learner, peer, near-peer, mentor

@MaximizeEDU I like this - from here I see the ability to segment 'people' into further groups e.g. creator/teacher, audience/learner, ambassadors/alum/mentors what do you mean by selectively choosing? can you expand on 'the help you need?' - is this for teacher or learner?

How can learning be designed to take advantage of: - peers - near-peers (someone one step ahead) - mentors (amateur and expert) How do you find the people you are looking for when you need them?

@CarynTan29 3/ Activities - Using different mediums for collaboration (video, text, audio) - Building internet artifacts in collaboration with others, where sum is greater than the whole - Remixing existing work on the internet

@CarynTan29 2/ Tools: - What data do you have access to on learners? - Identifying engagement and disengagement to respond accordingly - Using data to connect learners with similar challenges, questions, backgrounds, etc - Large scale collaboration in real time

A good way to start learning: find a buddy. You'll go much further together. A few benefits: thinking out loud, teaching through learning, pushing one another. Learning happens in the world, not just in your head

@Bazzaruto I love the idea of "thinking in tribes." The most powerful learning happens with other people -- and the bigger that tribe, the more you can all collectively accomplish and learn together

Thinking in tribes means identifying people in such a way that you can find more of them and become the go-to person for the group. Think Crossfitters vs "people who work out".

@david_perell Teach themselves and teach one another. A love of learning goes hand in hand with a love of teaching -- sharing that curiosity and knowledge with others

The easier it becomes to learn on your own, the more schools should teach kids to teach themselves and instill a love of learning in the first place

@Robinsony811 @dikayodata I also think that we need to educate people's support groups. My mom wanted to pursue a master's in CS but her father told her to go to business school instead citing appropriate gender roles #ethicalCS

For whatever reason, whether it’s abuse or culture, a lot of people can’t stand up for themselves but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve support and strength. They’ll find it on their own if enough people get them started. #ethicalCS
