If you don’t condemn beheading/cutting off ears & SUMGAIT-1988 where Armenian kids were burned alive don’t talk to me about peace or any other matter.

This was a great book. Kirk Kerkorian was a self-made billionaire that very few people know about. 5 interesting things I learned: 1. "There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots." Kirk received this advice in his early years as a transport pilot for military aircraft, where he developed a reputation for his risk tolerance and daring routes. Interestingly, his penchant for risk (being a "bold pilot") would become a core characteristic of his business and deal making life. In many ways, he defied the logic of this advice and did become an old, bold pilot of the business world. (see my point on Survivorship Bias in the next note) 2. If you’re going to bet, bet big. Kirk believed that a few big bets are always better than a bunch of small ones. It was a tendency he exhibited over and over again in his business life, going all in and pushing his chips back on the table. With stories like his, I'm always left wondering: How much of the narrative is colored by Survivorship Bias (i.e. how many others doing the same thing would have gone bankrupt along the way)? 3. Only invest heavily into situations where you have a degree of control. Kirk's perspective was cemented by a bad first casino deal where he was a passive investor and saw the deal go up in smoke due to poor management. From then on, he always tried to have an active stance in the operations of the business, even taking more of an activist role in his public market bets. 4. Start from the core and expand. While his business interests became diverse and vast over time, they started with what he knew well. His business career started with what he knew (airplanes), as he brokered and sold used airplanes, many of which he had flown during transports for the war. He turned his love of gambling into a business as he expanded into land around casinos, then operating casinos. 5. Kerkorian had an outsized influence on the life of a sports legend. Kerkorian had befriended a waiter at a Vegas hotel named Emmanuel Agassi. He supported him during lean times and took care of him and his family, so much so that Emmanuel gave his son the middle name Kirk. Andre "Kirk" Agassi went on to be one of the most celebrated tennis players in history and was friends with Kerkorian until the end. *** I'll probably start sharing more of what I'm reading if people find it interesting. Comment below to let me know. The Gambler is a great read for anyone interested in business, deal making, and history. Highly recommend. This is what your English schoolbook looks like if you're an Azeri school kid. #Armenophobia in #Azerbaijan.

In this moment where evil, hatred, and madness have once more taken so many innocent lives, we must stand together resolved to confront what is worst among humanity with what is best.

I know these conflicts can seem far away. It’s natural to ask: Why does this matter to America? Israel and Ukraine’s success is vital to our national security. History has taught us that when terrorists and dictators don’t pay a price, they cause more death and destruction.
