One thing I keep asking myself after watching the Polygamist is whether women like Essie really exist today. She was constantly pushed aside, yet she rarely stood up for herself. The moment that shocked me most was when her husband introduced her as his brother’s wife in front of another woman, and she simply accepted it. No confrontation, no outrage, nothing. To me, that character feels unrealistic. Most women today, regardless of how patient or reserved they are, would react strongly to that level of disrespect. It made me wonder if the writers exaggerated her silence to drive the story, because it’s hard to believe someone would tolerate that without eventually reaching a breaking point. Or do you think women like Essie actually exist?
