Iyo Sky defeats Asuka in a fantastic match at Backlash. For all intents and purposes, that match should’ve happened at WrestleMania. Imagine a match that strong being followed by Kairi Sane finally getting her revenge and closure in the story. That could’ve been an all-time moment. Instead, WWE unceremoniously released Kairi, and we got Asuka embracing Iyo after the match, finally acknowledging her as an equal rather than just a student. It was still a phenomenal performance from both women. I just can’t help but feel like we were robbed of an even bigger payoff with Kairi no longer involved. I was proud of the crowd for chanting “We want Kairi” during the match, though. It showed they didn’t forget her. Maybe that’s a win in itself.
