@DanAbrahams77 Amazing clip! I feel on the fence. While I certainly support sports science and load management, I do sometimes wonder if we’ve gone too far. I agree with your points though! Players should be involved and at least understand where we are coming from.

Have a watch of the video below…especially the last ten seconds where Wayne Rooney (seems to) bemoan the influence of sport science impinging on individual training time. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 Mr Rooney has forgotten more about football than I’ll ever know… 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 …but I do wonder if the challenge he sets out in this short clip is less a sport science problem and more the need for managers and head coaches to develop the best communication approaches across departments (up and down the organisation as well). This feels more about managers and head coaches developing the ability (and knowledge-base) to sense-make with their staff and players to improve judgement and decision-making. Modern day management and head coaching in sport is so tough, in part, because of the increased expertise in sport science, sport psychology, and skill acquisition. I would argue we don’t want less information (although we do want more accurate information) - we want the ability to make best possible decisions in context in a world filled with information. Some might call this leadership! Whatever term or label you choose to affix, the reality is that the boss can (probably) no longer afford to be a lone wolf at the front of the pack bravely pushing forward but with little connection to the rest. The wolf (the boss) belongs in the middle of the pack…able to push to the front when needed, able to shift left and right when required, able to drop back when the need arises. Able to delegate to other wolves when required. A leader…a head coach…should look north and south and east and west! Analogies aside… -talk to sport science and get to understand the literature they’re working from and their reasoning for their approach -help them to understand your lens of the world…strive to find commonalities and a set of approaches that blend and balance approaches -invite players to be a key part of the decision-making process -measure the impact of decisions made about training activity -be flexible…individual training doesn’t have to be never, nor, five times a week -session design individual development during the 90-120 minute training window -establish longer term development plans that helps organise and rationalise individual learning …and so on! Leadership in modern day sport is hard. Managers and head coaches are forced to step out of their comfort zone…and they should be demanding that support staff do to. They should be bringing others in, exploiting their expertise, and reaping the benefits of an integrated, holistic approach to human development. Perhaps, in sum, who wants leadership in sport to be easy anyway? Why would that be fun? And how would that be rewarding?
