Happy birthday to the biggest rebel in history. Where others saw humans as basket cases, she saw in us the potential of the hero. Where others saw us as tribal serfs, she saw freedom as existential necessity. Where others saw unintelligible chaos, she saw a world we can understand, and make a happy home. New tradition: on Ayn Rand's birthday, I'll be re-reading (or re-listening) my favourite chapter of her work. This year I'm picking Chapter 6 of Atlas Shrugged (the Rearden's party one).

You live in the 0,1% of human history where all this is possible, & you can't even understand or appreciate it.

Looking again at the video, I think they had aileron control, they may have been able to deploy flaps, so damage to tail meant no elevators, or at least very limited control. Aircraft with frozen elevator is still stable and can adjust pitch with speed, which is difficult. Adjust throttle, engine slows spools up or down, change in thrust means change in speed and speed controls whether the plane pitches up and down. It’s possible they were trying to do this. Or it’s possible the elevator just gave some limited control which failed them at the wrong moment.

@Nikos_17 Maybe it’s just me, but lately, I’ve seen Rand discussed seriously and respectfully in wider circles across political divides. Dare I say, *maybe* we’re on the cusp of something? Albeit, “cusp” is a fairly loose term in philosophical contexts.
