This year also marks a historic milestone: 11 Black women are matching into neurosurgery — the highest number ever recorded in a single match class. ✨ These figures reflect our ongoing commitment to documenting progress, strengthening the pipeline, and advancing representation across the field. The largest overall cohort on record remains 27 (2022) — the first match cycle following ASBN’s incorporation. This year’s class of 25 continues to reflect the sustained momentum of intentional investment and community. “If you can do microsurgery, you can learn to braid hair.” For years we shaved heads before brain surgery. Looked closer: leaving hair doesn’t raise risk of complications and patients prefer it. So I braid it. More work, more dignity. They’ll see that in the mirror every day.
