Judging from the comments below this post, I think it’s important for us to be aware that culture evolves. Also, that evolution has blurred lines drastically. Practices like lobola are indigenous to us. The idea of a Western-style “engagement” (rings, proposals, that whole pipeline) came much later. Over time, we’ve blended the two so seamlessly that people now speak with certainty, prescribing and even policing others as if this has always been “our culture.” It hasn’t. There’s nothing wrong with doing things the way you believe is right for you. But let’s not confuse adopted practices for indigenous ones, or enforce them as cultural truth. Awareness matters. Choice should follow.
