On the other hand Trump has also indicated he now favours post-war security guarantees for Ukraine which could even included some unspecified US involvement. The problem is nobody really knows what Trump means by such guarantees. Meanwhile Zelensky has been summoned to Washington Monday to be pressed by Trump to make major concessions even as Russia increases its onslaught. Trump now knows what Putin wants for even a semblance of peace and will try to oblige the Kremlin. He just wants out. Those who thought Alaska’s failure to produce a peace deal was the end of the matter are wrong. The days ahead are fraught with danger for Ukraine and its European allies, mere spectators at the feast. With Trump’s acquiescence the autocrats could be on the brink of yet another success, reinforcing my long-held view that the 21st century has so far been most notable for the march of the autocrats.
