@BLocsports Hitting the ball square and hard will naturally lead to homers as kids mature and get bigger/stronger. There’s no downside to fundamental hitting, it works for everybody regardless of physical power. 👍

Telling kids to hit 💣 is a great exit plan to them not wanting to comeback tomorrow. Eventually it will lead to quitting. It sounds fun but very few can do it. Fences being moved in with juiced balls and bats equals lets chase the 💣. Not Matty Approved
Steve Johnson@LegKickNationOG

If you coach early youth baseball, and you tell kids: DON'T hit the ball in the air because they're automatic outs DON'T try to hit homeruns. DO hit balls on the ground to 3B because you'll get to 1B more often. You are legit crushing the sport. Getting kids to "want to come back tomorrow" is YOUR ONLY ROLE. My 7 year old doesn't want to go back tomorrow. I don't blame him. You failed.

@HopalongAsks I suspect they got back afterwards and, behind closed doors, exchanged high fives and talked excitedly about how he fulfilled every awesome American stereotype they’d heard about.

@notgaetti When any outcome is overly governed by metrics, those metrics will be gamed for personal benefit or competitive advantage. It may as well be a fundamental force of nature. Call it Memo’s Law of Metrics.

@politicalmath Grind them levels. If you want an easier path, get a 100% shield with a magic build. You get infinite lives; you only lose when you quit trying. And use the spirit ash summons at every chance. Don’t forget to level them up, too.

@orwellian You’ve nailed the big issue of overhype: AI may take over a huge role in research assistance, but it’s not at all ready right now. Nor do we have any real timeframe, so slashing budgets now is very a myopic approach for corp/gov’t. Dumb to cut before a viable alternative exists.

@Memo_B_Random “When” what though? I also think things will improve dramatically, and LLMs & ML are good tools when used right (the companies, well..). But right now we live in a world where hype is dominating so much, people are saying “physics is cooked”, and NSF grants have been slashed.

Things will no doubt improve on this front, but as a sanity check, AI cannot currently derive the law of gravity when given lots of data about elliptical orbits (link to paper in replies, last updated a few months ago). No need to be as absolutist as Sabine; easy to prove wrong.

he's entirely right of course. even if you think he is wrong, at the very least physicists should think about why everyone else agrees they've lost the plot.

I always loved this film, when it tickled my imagination as a kid and as recently as last week. Sure, it tried to cram a lot into a reasonable run time, but it did so in a unique — and good —way. I do like the new ones, but Dune ‘84 scratches the itch in one sitting.
cinesthetic.@TheCinesthetic

Dune (1984) gets written off, even by Lynch, but the film’s worldbuilding is doing its own thing. Baroque sets, strange textures, and a future that feels alien in a way few sci-fi films even attempt. It’s rough, but there’s nothing else like it.

Forcing myself to watch the Jurassic World movies — against the Drinker’s warnings — and all I can say is that the series is like a visually pleasant cross between Jurassic Park and Resident Evil but far inferior to either one. FAR inferior.

@FilmLadd This reminds me of my years working as a contractor in mental institutions. Found out crazy people can be perfectly normal 95% of the time but then — bam! out of nowhere — they’ll say or do something completely wheels-off. Just now I realized that describes most of twitter.

If you want good reach, one of the worst things you can do is follow more people than follow you. When someone comes to me concerned about their reach, this is the first thing I check. Oftentimes, they follow way too many people. A high following-to-followers ratio is usually a clear sign of platform manipulation (indiscriminate following). As I watch trends in the X monetization programs, I'm quite certain they now target monetized creators who follow too many. If your only way to get followers is through platform manipulation, maybe consider whether you really are a content creator. Create a brand people want to follow, whether or not you follow them.
