On the quayside in Santurzi where the SS Habana sailed from in 1937 with approx 4000 Basque child refugees bound for Southampton, is a statue of a young boy and girl. A memorial to all those who sailed that day. The boy wears a replica of my father’s I.D. Card around his neck.

As a team, we are so excited to be working with artist Judith Martinez Estrada. Judith's creative practice explores collective and historical memory and the retelling of narratives though the use and interpretation of documents, images and artefacts found in the archive.

Judith will be retracing the journey made by evacuated children in 1937 from Bilbao to Southampton. By documenting, inhabiting and experiencing the same landscapes, Judith’s intention is to create empathetic and evocative interpretations of these histories as visual narratives.

These images and artefacts are used together with historical and post memory stories, and Judith will be taking part of our workshops in the Basque Country and United Kingdom this September.

As part of the project, we will be hosting a series of workshops in Spain and the UK, with memory activists, descendants of Basque refugees, and present-day refugee organisations. More information on the workshops will follow on our blog!
