INTRODUCING our new President! Epilepsy genetics pioneer Laureate Professor Sam Berkovic has been elected the 21st President of the Australian Academy of Science, Australia's leading independent voice for science. Berkovic, who discovered the first gene for epilepsy in 1995 and revolutionised our understanding of the disease, takes office at a time when investment in research and development is at a historic low. He says bringing science to the service of the nation so that everyone can benefit from it will be paramount during his presidency. Berkovic won the Prime Minister's Prize for Science in 2014 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society. He takes office in May 2026.

The CSIRO, the agency that gave the world Wi-Fi, among other world-leading research, has never been more important to Australia’s future. Successive governments have failed to invest. We need to turn that around and value the science and scientists that are key to our future. theguardian.com/australia-news…

The Australian Academy of Science welcomes the announcement that the Australian Government has started exploratory talks on Australia’s possible association to Horizon Europe. This is an important first step. Association with Horizon Europe would scale and diversify Australia international scientific collaborations. We’ve long advocated for Association to Horizon Europe, recognising it would mitigate geopolitical risks and deliver economic and scientific benefits to Australia. We look forward to supporting the talks in view of Australia taking its place in this world-leading research program. Vaccination is effective against specific infections, and for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or events. Global systematic review & meta analysis of the shingles vaccine showed it could lower risk of a heart attack or stroke by as much as 18%. theguardian.com/science/2025/s…

Too often, I see people talk about a replication as if the first study has established something, and the replication study is a double-check. What people often fail to understand is that we do not do replication studies to *check* a finding, but to *establish* a finding. 1/x

Generative AI runs on a paradox: it relies on content creators - artists, journalists and coders - whose work trains its models while eroding their incomes. The fix is to treat creative knowledge as a public good and fund it collectively. Read piece by @FaustoGernone and me ➡️ project-syndicate.org/onpoint/how-ai…

Persistent underinvestment in Australian R&D by government and the business sector is now intolerable. Within five years, Australia will be at the bottom of the OECD – no place to be in a volatile and technologically advanced world where research – and the technologies it produces – is a source of intense global competition and power. R&D investment creates new industries, gives us the tools we need to be self-reliant, makes us more resilient to external shocks, and turbocharges productivity and economic growth. Increasing government investment is only part of the solution. Sustained business sector R&D underinvestment has now amounted to a gap of $32.5B when compared with the OECD average. The Australian Academy of Science proposes incentivising large business R&D investment by introducing an R&D levy on businesses earning over $100M annually, with discounts for companies that invest in R&D. The levy revenue must be legislated, quarantined and invested in research to maintain the wellspring of innovation needed to keep the R&D system – including Australian businesses – healthy, productive, and delivering for all Australians. It is time for an urgent national conversation on R&D investment in Australia to secure our future. Learn more: science.org.au/news-and-event…

This study is of better methodological quality than previous ones and includes data on 5,200 runners (it is the largest study so far and a casual inference approach was used). It showed that the higher the ACWR, the lower the injury risk. Oops! bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/…

It's important to acknowledge the diverse ways individuals navigate the aging process and approach these discussions with empathy & understanding. I think that individuals should have the freedom to make deeply personal decisions about their own lives, including end-of-life care.
