My wife Yara and I were talking about everything we have gone through during the war in Gaza—how we survived death more than once, and how we were displaced from place to place, from one tent to another. Yara said to me sadly, “The world sees us as if we do not deserve life… no one sees us.” I tried to convince her that there are many people around the world who care about us, who stand with us and pray for us 🙏 So I wrote this tweet… so my wife can see how many people are still with us, and how many hearts still care about us. My big thing last year was finishing my PhD. I know how people feel about credentialism, but it was a big deal for me. It took everything I had. This year I'm looking forward to being a complete person again instead of a thesis-writing robot.

My mother-in-law said my quilt looks like a thrift store threw up on my bed, and I’ve never been more proud of anything in my life. It took me two years to make this. Every single square is a different fabric, most of them from clothes my kids outgrew, old curtains, or tablecloths I found at estate sales. That orange floral print in the corner was my daughter’s first Easter dress. The dark blue paisley came from my husband’s shirt from our first date—the one with the torn pocket he refused to throw away until I finally cut it up for this. My mother-in-law came over last week, took one look at my bedroom, and said, “It’s very busy, isn’t it?” in that tone she uses when she really means this is hideous and you have terrible taste. She said her quilts are all coordinated, matching fabrics, professional-looking. Said mine looks chaotic. She’s right. It is chaotic. It’s every phase of my life stitched together—squares that don’t match, colors that clash on purpose, patterns that argue with each other. I learned to quilt from YouTube videos at midnight after everyone went to sleep, pricking my fingers until they bled because I couldn’t figure out how to use a thimble properly. I bought most of the backing fabric from someone’s destash sale online—eight yards of the perfect dark floral for twenty dollars. I found binding supplies online too, from a woman who quit quilting after her divorce and just wanted it all gone. We ended up messaging about our projects, and she showed me how to do proper mitered corners and sent me links to other quilters online who sell vintage fabric scraps. My mother-in-law’s coordinated quilts sit in her linen closet, wrapped in plastic. Mine is on my bed every single night, covered in dog hair and coffee stains and the weight of every memory I sewed into it. Cheesy or not, it’s the most honest thing I’ve ever made. @panagis21 My 85 year old mother was in the hospital recently. When I would get ready to end our visits, she would say”please call me when you get home.” It doesn’t matter how of you are-your Mom is going to mother. 🥰

“Is my daughter going to make it?” Cases such as these always impact me as an ICU doctor: Watching an older parent, standing over their adult child in the ICU, praying and hoping for the best. However old we become, parents never stop caring 😔

My last remaining grandparent is struggling, and damn, it is so hard to say goodbye to a generation in a family.

I printed out all the letters & reports written for my tenure case. there are nine: five Shakespeare scholars, my department’s personnel committee, my chair, the committee for retention & promotion, and my dean. that all these scholars took the time is beyond my imagination.

My son hasn't spoken at school in four months. Complete selective mutism since the kids started calling him "the weird craft boy" who makes things instead of playing sports at recess. He's eleven and autistic, and art class used to be the only place he felt safe until his teacher told him his projects were "too babyish for middle school." He stopped making anything, stopped talking about his ideas, just came home every day and disappeared into his room with the door closed. Last week he was watching me work on snowman decorations for my online shop, these whimsical couples I make and sell for people's holiday mantels. Didn't say anything, just sat on the couch observing while I hot-glued fabric scarves and painted faces. Then two days ago I came home from work and found him in the garage surrounded by foam balls and fabric scraps he'd pulled from my supply bins, hands covered in paint, completely absorbed in creating these two figures. He'd been working for six hours straight without stopping, something he hasn't done since his teacher destroyed his confidence. He made himself and his little sister. The boy snowman has the same serious expression my son gets when he's concentrating, the same careful attention to detail in every button and hat decoration. The girl snowman is wearing pink because that's all his sister will wear lately, has flowers on her scarf because she picks dandelions for him every day after school. This is his first complete project since September, the first thing he's made that wasn't for a grade or an assignment, just pure creation because he wanted to express something he couldn't say with words. When he finished he asked if people would think they were stupid, if kids at school would make fun of them like they make fun of everything else he makes. I told him they were incredible and he needed to see that I wasn't just saying it because I'm his mom. He finally agreed to let me post this after two days of me begging, but he's been refreshing my phone every ten minutes checking for comments, needing to know if anyone besides me thinks he's talented. I buy a lot of my supplies from other crafters online, and I keep showing him their work trying to prove that handmade art matters, that people value things made with this much heart and skill.
