How did modern culture begin to see human nature as oppressive? Which ideas and philosophers set us on a path toward rejecting what it means to be human? Carl Trueman joins @MichaelHorton_ to discuss his latest book, "The Desecration of Man"

Regarding the controversial Thomas Aquinas: When I started Seminary at wscal, I was pretty new to the Reformed tradition (apart from the young, restless brand), and I took a seminar course with a bunch of seniors who would joke about Thomas this and Thomas that during class discussion. For the first part of the year, I thought Thomas was another student. I almost melted from embarrassment when I realized they were talking about a dead theologian.

Romans 3:9–20 No One Is Righteous [9] What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, [10] as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; [11] no one understands; no one seeks for God. [12] All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” [13] “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” [14] “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” [15] “Their feet are swift to shed blood; [16] in their paths are ruin and misery, [17] and the way of peace they have not known.” [18] “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” [19] Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. [20] For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. Romans 3

@DerrickEvans4WV Women are getting lazier by the day. They’re going to outsource motherhood. Children are already being indoctrinated by nannies and public schools, now they won’t even have a chance to bond with their mothers in their formative years. Very sad.

No, Jesus didn't tell us to pay taxes. The imperative in these verses is to pay whatever is due or actually owed. It wouldn’t have made sense for this passage to require that everyone pay tributes, since tributes were not actually owed by everyone, nor did the Roman empire even claim tributes of everyone. (Residents of imperial Italy, including the city of Rome, were famously “immune” or exempt from tributes.) Further, owing a custom depends on whether one is using the service, for example, a toll road or port of entry, for which the fee is a payment. That the Scriptural imperative is not “pay taxes,” but only to pay what one actually owes or is due, is further confirmed by Christ’s answer to the trick question posed by the Jewish leaders about whether it is lawful to pay Caesar tribute (Matthew 22:15-22; Mark 12:13-17; Luke 20:19-26). Christ’s answer was that Caesar should be given his own property, what actually belongs to him. In addition to comprehending the straightforward meaning of that answer, we can further understand that this didn’t constitute an imperative to pay taxes because the questioners were in awe of Christ’s having avoided their entrapment.

@conservmillen So Jesus didn’t mean it when he told us to pay our taxes? The bible doesn’t speak to any economic system. It only commands us to be cheerful givers of what the Lord blesses us with.

The Bible precludes socialism in 2 of the 10 commandments: “you shall not steal” and “you shall not covet.” The early church gave to each other voluntarily, not out of fear of the government. 2 Cor. 9:7 “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Thess 3:10 “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.” This is basic liberal Christian slop that was interesting to debate like 10 years ago, and Tucker is hoisting it up like it’s important and novel

Define Capitalism, as you understand it. (Don't give me a googled definition, that's obviously not the point of this post).

A memory of my childhood raised as a Southern Baptist. We were a middle class church, not super posh but not fundamentalist either, so rapture talk didn't turn up much at all. However, we would sometimes have what were called Revivals, a full week of preaching by a visiting preacher. His goal was to maximize conversions through the altar call. The single best means was to whip up rapture fear through end-of-the-world theorizing. Dispensationalism, the very eschatology heard often at the White House today. It worked every time. Maximum conversions, maximum revenue. It's a business.

@ConceptualJames James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. Satan can quote Scripture with the best of them. Doesn't mean jack squat!
