The Greek Prime Minister’s call to Christopher Nolan landed one day after the sharpest criticism the film had received all month, and not from a random critic. Emily Wilson, the classicist whose own translation of The Odyssey Nolan specifically credited as inspiration for his adaptation, published a scathing review of the film in the London Review of Books on Monday. Mitsotakis called Nolan on Tuesday, congratulating him on box office success and thanking him for renewing global interest in ancient Greek culture. The timing wasn’t coordinated, but it wasn’t nothing either. A government thank-you call arrived in the exact week the film’s most credentialed critic went public. There’s a second layer of friction the official statement leaves out entirely. Before Mitsotakis’s praise, there had been real pushback inside Greece itself over the near total absence of Greek actors in the cast, alongside separate criticism from Elon Musk over the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as Sinon. The film’s reception in Greece has been broadly positive since, but it wasn’t uncomplicated from the start, and the Prime Minister’s statement mentions none of that. What the call does confirm cleanly is the economic case, and it’s a real one. The production shot for three months across the Peloponnese, at Nestor’s Cave, Voidokilia Beach, Methoni Castle, and Acrocorinth, while drawing 7.2 million dollars from Greece’s 40 percent film cash rebate. As of July 29, the film had logged over 408,000 admissions in Greek cinemas in two weeks, nearly double its nearest domestic competitor. That’s the tourism and cultural bridge argument Mitsotakis is actually making, and the numbers back it. What gets smoothed over is that Nolan received this praise from Greece’s government in the same week its most serious literary critic said he’d gotten Homer wrong.
