What is mesh? It’s a plastic medical device used as a quick fix implant in operations to fix prolapse, incontinence, hernia, some mastectomies. But it can cause irreversible life changing pain & complications - impacting the patient, their partner & families #slingthemesh

@MeshCampaign We are at the beginning of this journey, after three years of pushing today I've got my 83 year old mum referred to a mesh injury clinic (did take a five day stay in hospital for urosepsis, one of many UTIs alongside torrential other symptoms to finally make the bloody point!)

Being ignored, gaslit, humiliated and disrespected are far too common experiences for women in our health system. This Labour Government's renewed Women's Health Strategy will ensure that women are actually listened to by empowering their voices in the NHS:

NHS faces a near-£20million compensation bill after rogue colorectal surgeon Dr Anthony Dixon botched operations on more than 450 patients. The 65-year-old used surgical mesh implants to treat bowel complaints without proper informed consent and often fabricated patient records. Hundreds of victims suffered life-changing injuries including chronic pelvic and rectal pain, mesh erosion, sexual dysfunction and some were left needing permanent colostomy bags. NHS Resolution has already paid out £19.12 million to 245 claimants, with millions more expected as further High Court cases are settled. Dixon was dismissed by North Bristol NHS Trust in 2019 and struck off the medical register last year after two misconduct tribunals. The trust has apologised to all affected patients and carried out a full review of the cases.

Thankyou @karinsmyth for acknowledging the #mesh injured community in today's Women's Health Strategy speech. The bravery of our community speaking out and the formidable Baroness Cumberlege first highlighted medical misogyny in the groundbreaking #firstdonoharm report in 2020
