How The SBC Got Played An unlicensed investigation, a lawyer editing a report about her own client, and $13 million in tithes later, the largest conservative Protestant denomination in America learned what happens when men fear the mob more than they fear God. Special thanks to @megbasham and @RodDMartin for their contribution to this project.🫡

@davemitz The SBC keeps losing a little more of my confidence each year. Stand firm, remove those who don’t. Biblical values (often called conservative values) must prevail.

SBC Credentials Committee: "We need direction from the Messengers on what to do about churches with women pastors" Messengers: Vote 88% in favor of disfellowshipping Saddleback over women pastors. SBC CC: "If only the Messengers would give us some sort of sign..." Messengers: Vote 92% in favor of disfellowshipping Fern Creek over women pastors. SBC CC: "Why do the Messengers keep giving us such mixed signals? 😫" Messengers: >60% vote for Law Amendment three years in a row. SBC CC: "The will of the Messengers remains a complete mystery. 🤷‍♀️ "

@jchasedavis I hate that each case has to be brought to the floor for a vote, but thankful our process allows the messengers to decide . Our Confession is clear.

As the presiding officer over this year’s SBC in June, I don’t relish seeing churches with female pastors brought to the floor, but I am thankful our process allows for the messengers to decide.

The 1689 affirms that the only two offices in the church are elders and deacons (26.8). Nowhere does it carve out a separate category for an elder who "rules" but does not teach.

@jrwhitehead @BaptistLeaders Jon there’s no need to rehash those details. You’re anti-NAMB, I get it. You have that right. Lots of people are. But I stand by my statement. Remove NAMB from the BCMD equation 100% and the result would have been exactly the same! Let’s move on after 10+ yrs

Here is the HEART of the NAMB vs. McRaney case. It was not about "religious liberty" or "church autonomy." It was about plain old defamation. @jrwhitehead explains: "The complaint by NAMB was that McRaney was not willing to do everything NAMB wanted. And so NAMB came to the state convention and said, 'If you don't fire MRaney, we're going to pull all of your funding.' And that would implode the state convention. They couldn't function without that outside money from NAMB. So the State Convention fired McCraney. And then McRaney says NAMB officers and leaders proceeded to call other Southern Baptist churches to try to make sure McRaney couldn't get a job or speaking engagements. And in the middle of that, not only were they saying, 'Well, look, McCraney was a bad leader,' which maybe you would expect in the old Baptist battle, but they were saying things like, 'McCraney didn't show up at meetings, or McCraney didn't ask for approval.' But McCraney says, 'I've got proof I was at all the meetings. I've got proof that I asked for all the approvals. That's just plain old defamation, right?'" And yes, it was: Plain old defamation.

@PastorPhilBCC @Protestia Ezekiel 8 is a great biblical place to consider. I agree though, we need not to celebrate the fall of the wicked but desire repentance. I actually believe that’s the heart of protestia

If the guys “trying to save the SBC” literally never talk about Jesus and only talk about politics, what are they wanting to save it from…or for?

This morning the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal in McRaney v. NAMB, which means the decision of the Fifth Circuit in favor of NAMB stands. A huge win for the religious liberty of Southern Baptists.

There’s been a good bit of discussion this week about whether secular courts are able to adjudicate defamation and other types of tort claims between Christians when the claims arise in the ministry context. A 🧵 with a few thoughts:

And, again, the people arguing for the right to sue fellow believers in secular courts are arguing for the right to sin, in violation of 1 Corin 6. That alone should give you pause about their argument.

@albertmohler I wonder who was in your ear to press you to make a comment on this. It sounds like you didn’t even investigate the issue. A lot of respect for you, Dr. Mohler. This could’ve been handled better than to berate the president about dignity.

The President of a seminary who: -Hired woke Professors and Faculty -Punished, demeaned, and fired non-Woke faculty -Platformed Leftists like Jarvis Williams and Russell Moore. -Platformed Liberals like James Hamilton and Hershel York -And allowed his White students to be stripped of their dignity Has absolutely zero room to criticize. You couldn't manage your little seminary. Your criticisms mean nothing.
