1) He didn't want to fight, he wanted to talk things out.
2) He's injured. We even got a scene where Katara tries to heal him and says it's serious, and he's constantly holding his side. It's explicit.

Sure they have Aang, but I doubt they ever sparred like this. Tagah was also ready to murder them. He had no limits.
