Today was the first day of school, my 16th as a teacher. Year 15 was terrible and I went completely off the rails. The stress and pressure got to me like it never has before, and I burned myself out completely to the point where I very seriously considered quitting and never going back. Work-life balance was non-existent, and old habits came back hard.
Being completely honest, I haven’t given two shits about myself in months. I allowed a job that would replace me in a heartbeat and not think twice about it run me over and steal every ounce of joy because I refused to set boundaries and say no. The scale when I step on it will be bad, but based on my face, the number won’t be a shock. Ive had some conversations with my #NSNG peeps of my struggles, but they weren’t deep enough.
So to start over for the millionth time sucks, but it’s not about how many times you fall, it’s about getting back up with non-negotiable boundaries setup at school in hopes that I don’t screw up yet again.
Non-Negotiables for 2024
1. No work email on my phone
2. No responding to after hours messages or texts from admin.
3. Leave campus no later than 4 PM and whatever doesn’t get done will be there when I return the next day.
4. Say no and stand firm on that.
5. Once I’m home, family gets my focus.
To clarify, I love my students and have a great team, but I got so wrapped up in test scores, data, testing that all the joy was lost. I refuse to do that again. Get ready, the mad tweeting starts again tomorrow!
