Flashback: Palestinian Islamic leader Sheikh Yusuf Al-Makharze screams that Muslim men who marry minor girls are fulfilling Allah’s divine will and setting the best example for Muslims. He claims that Allah himself puts egg cells inside girls (some as young as 9) as signals to Muslim men to use the girls. This is not a fringe opinion. It is mainstream Islamic teaching that treats little girls as sexual property to be used by grown Muslim men whenever the man feels the “signal” from Allah. In Islam, girls are not human beings with rights, they are objects to be owned, married off as children, raped, and discarded when inconvenient. This Palestinian Muslim leader is simply following Islam doctrine according to which, child marriage and child rape are not crimes but Allah’s orders for Islam’s worshippers.

That's not a loophole. That's a country that stopped protecting its own people. So don't tell me this was random. A war could not kill her. A bomb could not kill her. An ocean could not kill her. A broken courtroom did. From two thousand miles away, with a rubber stamp and a shrug. She did everything right. The system did everything wrong. And she is the one who is gone. Here is the only part that lets me breathe. Her death did not disappear. North Carolina took her name and carved it into law. Iryna's Law. Now a judge has to look a violent record in the face before turning someone loose. No more walking free on a signed promise. Harder bail when the danger is staring right at them. Signed. Real. In effect right now. It should not take a dead 23-year-old to make a courtroom do its job. But it did. It took her. She should be closing up the pizzeria tonight. She should be texting her mom, "made it home, love you." She should be alive. She should be ALIVE. They had him fourteen times. And a girl who escaped a war paid the entire bill, alone, on the floor of a train. Her name was Iryna. Don't let this country forget what it cost.
