@DanielPriestley I’m agreeing with all points and I’m trying to learn and adjust for my last few years of work, and more importantly to assist my children and grand children survive and thrive in the now and future world, although I still firmly believe in home ownership as soon as possible.

We are living through the breakdown of the Industrial Revolution Social Contract. Early in the Industrial Revolution, the social contract was not stable. People worked like slaves in factories and mines. After a hundred years of negotiations a social contract was formed that worked - do dehumanising repetitive work for 8hrs a day 5 days a week in exchange for enough money to raise the next generation of workers in a home you will own and then get 10 years of retirement. Then the Industrial Revolution gave birth to triplets that would blow up the entire system - 1. Finance (as opposed to capitalism) - capitalism is based on sound money - someone has to have the capital to invest. Finance looks similar but it's based on the ability to magic up money from thin air based on agreements. 2. Digital technology - the ability to do a lot of the thinking and decision making for free and at scale. It also automated most of what happens in a home, so women were freed up to join the taxable labour force. 3. Globalisation - the ability to make things at a lower cost in a poorer country and then sell those things for a higher cost in a wealthier country. Once we discovered the power of finance we turned homes into an investable asset rather than a utility. This effectively quadrupled the real price of homes. Digital tech massively diminished the value of labour. An employer didn't need their people to think or decide very much, they just had to follow the systems. Once digital technology took hold it required 24 pay checks to run a home rather than 12. We are now in a post Industrial era but we have not settled on a social contract that works yet. It's not clear what we must give to the system in exchange for society giving us what we want. Here's what's probably going away for most people... - retirement - home ownership - liveable wages - 8 hr work day .. These things were all fiercely negotiated in exchange for humans becoming reliable factory workers who each produced massive economic output for the system. Given we are no longer able to fulfil our side of that bargain, the other side won't be fulfilled either. The good news, here's what's available for those who recognise how the new system works... - do work you don't want to retire from - business ownership - recurring revenue from Intellectual property - live and work from anywhere These things are all compatible with a globalised system flush with finance and abundant in technology. The big arbitrage right now is that most people have not figured out that this new social contract exists for almost anyone. Most people are stuck chasing the 1960s definition of success that they learned about in the industrial age school system. When did everything go to shit?.... It was about 2010. At this moment, digital technology was firmly in place, globalisation was a full formed system that had eroded the social contract in the developed world and finance had the go ahead to ramp up the cost of all sensible assets. What do you think? Does this make sense? Are you chasing the old social contract or the new one?
