The 'trap' is not being able to consider your house your home, not having someone living on a plot of land you have - for primarily reasons of luck - gained exclusive control over

Imagine being @tomhfh, sat at home utterly mad that tenants may face some security in the private rental sector going forward 😂💩

The social contract in the UK has been broken, and if only ownership was the only issue. Rents are equally unaffordable, to the point where even professionals on a median wage can’t afford to rent a 1 bed on their own in London. Seriously seriously broken.

Our research found that white people were 36% more likely to receive a positive response when applying to rent on SpareRoom than black people. The discrimination black renters face is horrific. Reform of the private rented sector needs to root out racism news.sky.com/story/white-pe…

🏙️ As much as 80% of our health comes from what we do and the environments we’re in. A future Labour administration can and should use this knowledge to improve the nation’s health and prosperity. 8/8

Fascinating paper showing that private renting - and the insecurity implicit in it - is associated with markers of faster biological ageing (& related health consequences). Interestingly, social renting is no different to outright ownership once other factors are accounted for.

Are housing circumstances associated with faster epigenetic ageing? (Yes-especially private renting, arrears and pollution exposure) @amyclair503 @UniofAdelaide @Housing_CRE @HSA_UK jech.bmj.com/content/early/…

2. Local authorities have had funding slashed massively over the last 13 years. Look at the state of social housing. They are now under pressure to enforce this bill and monitor landlords. Will they be given the huge funding needed to do this? This is very crucial

Bad housing is ruining our children's education. 1 in 5 struggling to make it to school cite cramped conditions, insecurity, & poor-quality homes. Everything starts with housing. Our right to a good home is too important to be left to the market. theguardian.com/education/2023…

Housing affordability can have a huge impact on our health, with those on the lowest incomes hit particularly hard. In 2019/20, 26% of households on the lowest incomes spent more than a third of their income on housing costs. Read more 🔽 health.org.uk/evidence-hub/h…
