Os primeiros retornos de chão começaram a se popularizar no fim dos anos 60. Os in-ear monitors (os retornos no ouvido) só foram criados nos anos 80, mas só se tornaram padrão nos anos 90. E Michael usou retorno de chão durante a carreira, mas os fones? Jamais. Michael cresceu em uma época em que ninguém usava nada disso. Michael não aprendeu a cantar com retorno. Ele aprendeu do jeito antigo: pelo som ambiente, pela banda, pelo próprio corpo e até pelos dançarinos Era um artista formado na era analógica. Por décadas, Michael dançou e cantou ao vivo confiando na memória muscular e na sincronia com a música, não no retorno. Produtores e técnicos que trabalharam com ele (como Brad Buxer) relatam que Michael não gostava de retorno alto e muitas vezes preferia não usar nada.
