@daveg yes I think it was purposely designed to look as familiar as possible to reassure passengers, e.g. with a drivers seat and steering wheel, despite not needing it.

David Foster Wallace’s essays seem like the clearest precursor of “internet writing style”: note the italics for emphasis, the informality, the casual speech tone. This reads like a modern blog post.

@daveg Isn’t the average age of a new car buyer in their fifties most places? I used to work on car brand marketing in Uk 15-20 years ago and it was the case then. Don’t dispute your broader point though!

But my point is that you should read it because you might find — like I did — that you will dredge up many memories from your childhood, where you made subconscious decisions to fit in with this group or that group, and in so doing become yourself.

I cannot believe I’m saying this, but: read The Nurture Assumption. There is a lot of things written for and against the book, as it is deeply controversial. But learn from my mistake and ignore all that commentary. Read it even if you do not currently have kids.

Microsoft Copilot already uses these tools. The results? 12.3% conversion for AI-assisted shopping vs 3.1% without agents (!!)

Loving the Agentic Commerce tools from Shopify. They're a peak at how Shopping will become AI Native Worth studying if you're in Agentic Commerce. Or even if you just buy online. A quick 🧵 with my thoughts.
tobi lutke@tobi

Agents will become a common way people shop. So today we are releasing 3 tools to make adding commerce to those agents trivial: - Checkout Kit: embed commerce widgets and checkout(!) directly into your agent and chat. This is already being used by Microsoft’s @Copilot. - Shopify Catalog: low latency global product search across millions of merchants - Universal Cart: shop from any store, anywhere, in one cart With these, you can build seamless embedded commerce experiences quickly, starting with all the best products by the best merchants in the world instead of having to sign them all up individually. No need to build a complex new checkout, or dealing with regulatory marketplace rules. Commerce just plugs in and feels seamless in conversations. We believe commerce should be everywhere people are, so we’re making that as easy as possible for the AI age.

@moseskagan It’s incredible. Read it very recently and was astonished at how good it was. Now my favourite book

Probably the most profound thing I've ever read about the tension between fatherhood and ambition. (Am only ~1/3 of the way through it, and East of Eden is already among the very best books I've ever read.)

@david_perell When I asked them 2y ago they said they cook the steaks via sous vide.. which means they (most likely) cook the steaks in a plastic bag. It is possible to sous vide without contamination, but nontrivial

If I could bring one restaurant chain to America, it’d be Flat Iron in London: solid steaks, fairly affordable, simple menu, insanely quick, comfy enough decor, nice enough for a work lunch but casual enough to eat with friends. Asked the waitress about the business and she said there’s ~20 locations in England, ~45 minute waits on the weekend, and the economics work out because they move people in and out so much faster than traditional steakhouses.

@s8mb Absolutely. The Grenfell tower fire killed 72 people and totally changed building regs. Current heatwave has estimated 570 deaths mostly elderly, with 10,781 deaths 2920-2024. All heat pumps could be mandated as ACs and can be zero emissions. Any opposition is degrowth not Green.

I don't know how people manage without air conditioning in this weather. The idea that opening a few windows and turning a fan on is good enough is crazy. The people responsible for stopping aircon from being built into in new build housing in Britain really should be in jail.

if you’re not on any other psychoactive substances, try quitting for 6 mo or longer, use decaf if you need the benefits will become apparent as your nervous system rewires, your excercise regime can influence your energy cycles and this is a good time to really feel and shape your fascia after you’re clean for a long time, as soon as you have a strong coffee or two, even tea, a few hours in as it’s wearing off, you’ll experience the effects of caffeine fully, for many, especially those most sensitive, this brings the realisation that you don’t really like the high that caffeine gives you and with this embodied knowledge you’re unlikely to take it on again herbal teas are way nicer anyway

Someone needs to invent a pill that negates the effect of caffeine. I’d love a coffee right now but I’d be awake all night.

2) chatgpt.com/c/680015c9-2c9… I asked it to analyze Bolaño and what was good about him. Didn't give it any examples. The points it made were pretty damn good, and there were a few citations but all high-quality as well. Like deep research, but fast and much less slop.
