This home in Dakar 🇸🇳 was built with raw earth bricks and no AC. Its circular form is inspired by traditional Senegalese homes, with a courtyard and trees at the centre. The house is oriented north-south to capture natural light and prevailing winds. Small openings in the roof allow hot air to escape. The building is raised by 450mm to reduce the risk of flooding. The walls are made from locally produced earth bricks, pressed by hand and sealed for durability. The floors use a traditional broken tile technique, finished with linseed oil for protection and brightness. Glass walls are triple-glazed to insulate the interiors from heat. They open fully for airflow and close when protection is needed. From the windows to the gutters and furniture, everything was made locally. Nothing was imported. This is what happens when design respects where it is built. Local materials are not backward. They work. 📍 Dakar, Senegal Architect: Cyrus Ardalan Photography: Alice Mesguich

I was watching a video interview of the former SEC DG and World Bank treasurer, Mrs. Arunma Oteh, the other day. She mentioned she started following the Nigerian stock market as a child when her parents would ask her and her siblings to analyse the annual reports of companies they had shares in. This was what spurred her early interest in finance. She also mentioned that it was mostly the dividend payments from the companies that her parents invested in that was used in training them in school. As you learn and grow in the finance space, also make sure your kids are adequately exposed to the subjects of finance and investment from an early age. Not just your kids alone. Also carry your friends and spouses along too. We can't afford to leave anyone in the dark. All hands must be on deck. It is no longer enough to leave just properties and other assets for your families. If they don't have sound financial knowledge, all those assets might end up in the hands of strangers with better financial knowledge. This is the reason why most wealth are lost in the third generations. No succession planning. Meanwhile, Mrs. Arunma Oteh recently launched her new book, "All Hands On Deck." It's a documentation of her personal journey in the finance space as well as her experience as DG of SEC. You can find the book on Amazon or your local bookshops. It is worth reading.

Scientists just made 50-year-old skin cells behave like they’re 20 again. Researchers at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge have developed a groundbreaking method to reverse the biological aging of human skin cells by approximately 30 years, all while keeping them as fully functional adult skin cells. The team used a carefully controlled, short-term version of the Nobel Prize-winning Yamanaka reprogramming technique. By exposing adult skin fibroblasts to a specific set of reprogramming factors (the Yamanaka factors) for just 13 days—and then stopping the process early—they successfully “reset” many molecular markers of aging without pushing the cells all the way back to a stem cell state. After this brief treatment, the rejuvenated cells displayed a dramatically younger profile: their epigenetic clock (a measure of chemical tags on DNA that tracks biological age) and their gene expression patterns (the transcriptome) closely resembled those of cells from much younger individuals. Even more impressively, the cells behaved younger too. The treated fibroblasts produced significantly higher levels of collagen—the protein essential for skin firmness, elasticity, and wound healing—and they migrated faster to close an artificial “wound” in laboratory dishes compared to untreated older cells. The researchers also observed reversal of age-related changes in genes associated with diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cataracts, suggesting the technique could have broader therapeutic implications. While this work is still in its early stages and the precise mechanisms remain under investigation, the findings open exciting possibilities: one day, scientists may be able to selectively rejuvenate aging cells in the body to enhance tissue repair, improve healing, and potentially slow or mitigate some effects of age-related diseases—without the risks associated with fully reprogramming cells into stem cells. “Nowadays, none of us can afford to be indifferent to geopolitical trends. Whether or not you believe that there was a rules-based international order, it is clear that changes are underway, which will affect all of us. One thing that has not changed, however, is that right and duty of every nation, to ensure the safety of its borders and its people. It is that duty that never changes. Rwanda is no exception. And yet, for reasons that continue to elude us, Rwanda is consistently asked to ignore threats to its security and compromise its national defence. The conflict in eastern DRC is neither new, nor is it too difficult to understand. It has been prolonged for decades, due to neglect and complacency, notably by those with the power to make the biggest difference in resolving it. Rwanda’s security concerns stem from the continued presence of the FDLR and its violent extremist ideology, which is the ideology of genocide. Unfortunately, that seems to have some backers in the region and beyond, under all kinds of guises. Rwanda, because of its history and its geography, requires defensive borders. Our defensive measures are aimed at this objective, and nothing else.” President Kagame | Diplomatic Dinner
